Only 4% of Jewish Israelis own personal weapons.
Every Palestinian who has perpetrated a terrorist attack against Jews should be killed on the spot, even if he has been apprehended and no longer poses a threat, a majority of Israeli Jews believe, according to the monthly Peace Index poll released on Thursday.
Asked to what extent respondents agree with that viewpoint, one third said they strongly agreed, 19.7 percent moderately agreed, 17.1% moderately disagreed, 26.6% totally disagreed, and 3.5% did not know or declined to respond.
But only 4.4% of Jewish respondents said they owned a personal weapon that could be used to kill terrorists.
The poll, sponsored by the Israel Democracy Institute and Tel Aviv University, was conducted last Wednesday and Thursday amid headlines of stabbings in Israeli cities. The Midgam Research Institute polled 600 respondents who constitute a representative sample of the adult Israeli population.
The findings of the poll indicate that Israeli Jews favor taking more severe action against terrorists. Close to 80% backed destroying the family home of a Palestinian who murdered Jews for nationalistic reasons, but only half as much said they support destroying the home of a Jew who murdered Palestinians.
More than 70% said punishments given by Israeli courts to Palestinian terrorists were too light, but only half as much said sentences given to Jews who attacked Palestinians were too light.
Asked if the current wave of terrorism had changed their daily behavior, 64% of Israeli Jews reported that they have not changed their daily habits, such as taking public transportation and altering shopping routines, due to the security situation.
But 57% said they feared that they, or someone important to them, would be harmed in an attack.
By contrast, the Arab public expressed greater fear. Some 78% answered that they were apprehensive about being harmed and a majority (53%) did report a change in their daily habits.
Despite the wave of terrorism, more than half of Jewish respondents said they favor conducting diplomatic negotiations with the Palestinians. But only 4.4% strongly believe such talks could lead to peace in the coming years and only 18.8% moderately believe talks could lead to peace.
Asked what grade institutions should be given for how they have dealt with the recent terrorism, 93% of Jewish Israelis gave a good grade to the IDF, 84.5% gave a good grade to the state police, 71% to the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), and less than 40% said they would give high marks to the government.
Among Arab Israelis, none of the institutions received good grades. Only 31.3% gave good grades to the IDF, 27.7% to the police, 15.3% to the Shin-Bet, and just 23.9% said they would give high marks to the government.
More than half of Jewish respondents (58%) consider that in the current state of affairs, Jews should not be allowed to pray on the Temple Mount.
When asked, “Is [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s policy toward the conflict with the Arab world over the question of prayer on the Temple Mount good or poor from Israel’s standpoint?†49% of Jewish Israelis and 65.5% of Arab Israelis responded that it is very poor or moderately poor.
The maximum margin of error for the poll is ±4.1% at a confidence level of 95%.

Sounds a lot like our gun free zones. Perhaps the attacks would stop immediately if a *much* higher %age became trained gun owners. Its hard to figure why, give Israel’s situation, why everyone doesn’t pack.

That would play badly with the antisemitic mainstream media. It's better to kill terrorists on the spot - but before it can reasonably be claimed that the evil murderers have been apprehended and no longer pose a threat. It is better to arm more decent Israelis and make sure they have the proper ammo to take down threats and the proper training to continue shooting until the threat is neutralized.
Israel should have at least 10% of its Jewish population armed at all times, and tax dollars should subsidize regular armed self-defense training for Jewish members of the general population.
Do not point the palestinian at anybody. Always treat the palestinian as if it is loaded. It just might be.

I’m guessing a good plan would be to capture, interrogate, shoot them while they escape, dispose of the bodies in such a way they’ll never be found.
The idea of the US detaining known murdering terrorists at a rest facility such as Gitmo, only to be released later by a sympathetic regime is just ludicrous.

Notice the article said ‘personal weapons’ not duty or issue. I would think most Israelis in the military dont carry their issue weapon day to day. I think the point is the avg joe there doesnt carry concealed. That should change. In fact Im not sure why everyone isnt armed to the teeth.
One difference in Israel is that around 10 percent of the Jewish population is active duty or reserves with ongoing training. That would be the equivalent of over 30 million in the armed forces of the USA.

Yes, I knew about that. Even 10% seems very small given Israel’s past. I have the idea gun ownership is higher in the orthodox Jewish community. Its still not clear why guns are much more common there.
I think a lot of them do, from pictures I have seen. The attackers seem to be going for the ones who are obviously NOT carrying.
Gun ownership in Israel is tightly controlled. Of course the 4.4% doesn’t include military and reservists who are armed, but don’t “own” their weapons. At the same time, it would include I assume at risk occupations such as transportation and security guards. And residents of the West Bank, so the number of handguns in the hands of regular civilians is much lower than 4.4%. I’m open to correction, but I believe ownership includes the right to carry.
Yes, I understood the govt tightly controls gun ownership but Id like to understand why. It seems theyd encourage it.
As to the question of ownership, remember a part of Israel's history is the continuance of the Brit's highly restrictive laws on ownership. A link to the law in 2002.
The Israel Dept. of the Interior makes notification to the general public the requirements necessary for the obtaining of a permit to possess a firearm:1. Applicant must be a permanent resident of Israel for 3 consecutive years prior to making application for a firearms permit.
2. Applicant must be 21 years of age.
3. The permit request must be for personal use, not to engage in the business of firearms sales.
4. Applicant must fall into one of the following categories:
a. Part-time reservist (volunteer) for 3 years- may own 1 handgun
b. Such a reservist (volunteer) is a member of a gun club - may own 1 rifle
c. Professional, licensed public transportation driver, transporting a minimum of 5 passengers - may own 1 handgun
d. Licensed animal control officer- may own 2 hunting rifles, *not* full automatic weapons, or semi-automatic weapons with a limited capacity magazine.
e. Full-time dealer of jewelry or large sums of cash or valuables - may own 1 handgun
West Bank and Gaza Strip Settlers:
1. A resident in a militarily strategic buffer zone, essential to the security of the State of Israel - may own 1 handgun
2. A business owner in these geographic areas - may own 1 handgun
Veterans:
1. Veterans of the Regular Army honorably discharged with the rank of non-commissioned officer, and veterans of the Reserve Army with the rank of regimental commander- may own 1 handgun
2. Retired law enforcement officers with the rank of sergeant - may own 1 handgun
3. Retired prison guards with the rank of squadron commander- may own 1 handgun
Individuals:
Upon presenting documentation that one is about to receive a souvenir, a prize, an inheritance, or an award of appreciation from the Israel military.
I believe it's been liberalized a bit since then. I think most citizens can purchase a handgun now, but it's a time consuming process, and note handgun means that, not plural.
Approval time here is 10 minutes.
