Cruz Disagrees With Trump on Muslim Registry
Texas Tribune ^ | 11/20/2015 | Patrick Svitek

Ted Cruz on Friday put a bit of distance between himself and arguably his closest ally in the presidential race: Donald Trump.

Kicking off a two-day swing through Iowa, the U.S. senator from Texas was asked about Trump's apparent openness Thursday to a national registry of American Muslims in the wake of the recent Paris terrorist attacks.

"I'm a big fan of Donald Trump's, but not a fan of government registries of American citizens," Cruz told reporters before a town hall at Briar Cliff University. The "First Amendment protects religious liberty."

Asked Thursday by NBC News if he wanted to monitor Muslims in America through a database, Trump replied he would "certainly implement that." The suggestion has drawn comparisons to Nazi Germany and has sparked bipartisan criticism.

Cruz has cultivated a chummy relationship with the billionaire, declining to directly criticize him on a host of issues. He refused to go further Friday when asked again about Trump's idea, reiterating his belief that reporters just want to see the two duke it out.

Cruz was joined at the town hall by U.S. Rep. Steve King of Iowa, who endorsed the senator Monday. Speaking with reporters, King also expressed some opposition to Trump's idea of a Muslim registry, saying he did not know how it would work in practice.

It’s not Cruz’s job to clean up Trump’s gobbledygook answers or make excuses for Trump’s gaffes.

"Cruz needs to learn that Islam is NOT a "Religion,..."

Islam is a religion practiced by millions of people. A week ago, I attended a study of how the Islamic faith differs from Christianity. The speaker was an ex-cia agent who lived for many years in Islamic countries and knows every facet of that religion. There it was on the board, the differences of the two religions.

As to this article, Cruz is right that no American Citizen should be registered by religion by the government, and that includes any American Citizen whose religion is Islam. Once government has the power to register Islamic American Citizens, we are all in danger of the government registering all American Citizen Catholics, all Baptists, etc..

If you are in a group in the majority who can bring about a law that smashes a minority group, that law is still there when you become the minority group and you get smashed. Any law should be FAIR and necessary; no law should be written to be vindictive just because the majority group can. It WILL come back to hurt you in the future.

Now, not registering American Citizens by religion does not mean the government cannot have a list of suspect Muslims, citizens or not, plus any other person, citizen or not, and suspect means they have exhibited behavior that may be criminal. Certainly there already is a list the government (FBI, NSA, Homeland Security) is watching, Muslim or not, citizen or not, with suspect behavior. They are already watching over 700 such individuals in the USA since the Paris massacre.

By the way, I just spoke to my son in London where he has lived for over twenty-five years. He assures me the office where he is editing a documentary film, is a number of blocks from central London where terrorists would be most likely to hit.

He said the borders of Britain were tightened some time ago, and are more secure than the French borders were. Also said for some time now, their police and special units stay armed and ready to respond.

A few days ago, he sent a picture of himself to me that was made in Monroe County, Arkansas. He was there this last weekend, and he had on a bullet proof vest and I asked him why he was wearing that. He was with the sheriff of the county, riding on patrol with him. He and the sheriff are friends since that sheriff was in one of the documentary film series, “Heroes Behind The Badge” son did two years ago. It appears another "Hero" series will be made next year.

Yes, he was wearing that bullet proof vest - what is a Mother to do? I can't protect him like I could when he was four and a big dog was chasing him - I stopped that dog but I can't stop bullets. Pray for all our law enforcement officers who never know when they will face bullets.

Cruz just hit Trump over something that he never said. Cruz ought to be ashamed of himself. I hope Trump hits Cruz hard.

Do you have a source for Trump’s exact quote stating that Muslim registries would be a good idea??? As I’ve read it, Trump did not take the bait on Muslim registries. He didn’t answer the question posed as he was working the rope line, so the “journalist” reported that he didn’t rule it out. THAT is not the same thing. Far from it.

You mean we don’t already have a database tracking subversive enemy infiltrators and radical terrorists, sleeper cells, suspicious mosques and muslims, etc?

If not, why not?

Islam is the enemy. They are at war against us and against all western nations.

Someone had better wake the hell up!

Sorry, you’re wrong. Ask your son what London and the rest of England was like twenty five years ago and what it is like now. Ask your son about SHARIA law being recognized in England. Ask your son about entire townships in England where Englishmen don’t dare tread. Ask your son about the thousands of Englishmen who leave England every year and move to France, Australia, and elsewhere because “England isn’t England anymore”.

ISLAM is NOT a religion, it is a political scheme to force submission of entire countries with the end view of a WORLD WIDE CALIPHATE of one religion, ISLAM! The very meaning of the word Islam is SUBMISSION. It is NOT compatible with the United States Constitution. It is NOT compatible with Christianity or ANY other bonafide religion.

ISLAM declared war on the United States years before 9/11. It is STILL waging war against us and unfortunately has the blessing of Obama and his gang of One World Order Lunatics.

Islam is a disease much like the Stockholm Syndrome. It needs to be wiped out or at the very least CONFINED TO ITS OWN TERRITORY. It does NOT belong in America....the former land of the free.

Oh, well if Rush said it, the guy who believes in voting "against," then ...

Yep, he sure did. Opportunist, anyone?

If you're thinking of smearing Cruz with the "opportunist" meme, have the honesty to read this.

Looks like Trump being caught pretty much red-handed being an opportunist. Maybe you can find some way this report faked Trump's 2012 twitter posts if you want to deny it?

Because, apparently, your desire to slander Cruz is greater than your ability to read.

Quite true. And in fairness, I must admit to being tempted to do the same with regard to Trump, then I read his words, and find out the smear was unfounded. SOMETIMES. But on the other hand, Trump's words revealing him as a moderate or A-Okay with more and bigger government "solutions," are confirmed with one's ability to read, and there are people here who go into extreme denial when it comes to anything negative about Trump. They refuse to read what they don't want to read.

Cruz isn't perfect -- I've read enough about him to know this. Trump isn't perfect either -- my ability to read causes me to conclude that Trump is much more moderate and inclined to the left than Cruz.

The older a person becomes, the more clearer is right and wrong.

Since I don’t trust our government and since I don’t trust those coming into our country to ever want to be citizens... and since too many in our country are willfully ignorant... I am on the side of sending EVERY illegal back home ASAP 2. shutting down EVERY mosque nd destroying the insides for any future use by muslims 3. firing every muslim teacher/preacher/loud mouth 4. Getting a message to our learning facilities to never teach islam as a peaceful religion 5. teach the ignorant ones just what sharia law is... taught by hand chosen persons 6. Declare this country was and is a Christian country. Honor prayer, Bible, in our schools.

If you think we are losing our country to infidels.. there are good reasons to think that to be... get back to what made our country great... and the youth do not know what those things are. Go back to doing what is right and good for our land. If you take God our and replace Him with allah... or anything else in that category.. you’ll get just what is happening right now. death and destruction.

"I'm a big fan of Donald Trump's, but not a fan of government registries of American citizens,"

Funny, but they all seem to support E-Verify, which requires that exact thing.

Since you seem intent on smearing Cruz as being an "opportunist," here's another one for you -- the opportunist being the "conservative" who says same-sex marriage "isn't his thing," but that his views on it are "evolving."

Looks like Trump acting like an opportunist to me., just like the link in my post #130 is the same.

So if you're going to smear Cruz as an opportunist -- be prepared to assess your own candidate with equal candor.

E-Verify is not mandatory. It’s how millions of greedy unscrupulous employers get around it.
