I agree we need a government program. Start axing colleges which create liberal Demonrats and start using the internet to replace liberal college professors.

Just have videos of the lectures from top experts and cut college costs by 90%.

The last bad example American youth need from a Republican Administration is “a new government program”—the very last!

That’s not what he said. Gabby Morrongiello is a liberal. RW, how’s your boy Jeb doing?

- Typical Trump supporter.

He continued, “You know the one program that the U.S. makes a whole lot of money with is student loans, and that's maybe the one program they shouldn't be making money with.”

Interesting title as opposed to what he said.

It’s funny, I watched that town hall meeting. My take from what he was telling the students was that he was going to make jobs. That when they graduated they would be able to find jobs.

I agree on one part...

The government should not be ‘ for profit ‘ in any regard.

Student loans is just one example.
Another would be the Army Corps of Engineers, which is a government fee for service organization, yet they also claim regulatory powers.

Some ideas:

1. Cut the percentage of administrators down to 1970s levels. Especially those with “diversity” in their title. Note: this would also mean cutting Federal regulations and guidance.
2. Close and consolidate failing colleges at the State level.
3. Discourage colleges that build too much or spend too much on student perks.
4. Make sure faculty teach at least two classes per semester (preferably, at least three).
5. Get rid of majors where students graduate with debt, but not jobs. This would flush all the race & gender studies majors.
6. Get rid of tenure for professors.

Sadly, none of the above will happen without an apocalypse.

"Well the only way you can do it is you have to start some governmental program and you have governmental programs right now," Trump told the moderator during the forum, which was held at a local community college.

Donald Trump, just dripping with conservatism.

He (and every other candidate) needs to find out why college costs more than a house. Something’s wrong and I bet it has something to do with democrats.

The only “government program” needed is to make student-loan debt dischargeable in bankruptcy.

Do that, and no lender will make student loans to anyone not likely to have a real job on graduation and the inclination to actually pay the loan back.

While I’m certainly opposed to price controls and salary caps in the private sector, perhaps they would be useful in state run, taxpayer funded academia. Cut some of the ridiculous faculty, staff and administrator salaries and adjust tuition downwards. Replace a lot of the university support staff with work study programs and have the students pay for part of their tuition with labor towards running the places.

"So we're going to have to start a program," he said. "We're going to do something very big with loans because you have to get these people going. They really feel down and out."

Just what we need - another government program

Playing to the audience. If that is what it takes to win, OK but this is about the first thing he has said I disagree with.

And Donald Trump wants to create a database for anyone who isn't one of his supporters. Just like Hitler. I heard this last night on NBC Evening News.

Do I really have to put in a sarcasm tag?

We don’t need programs. We need to tell the youth of our nation, we will not bankroll loans for them. My daughter is a junior in college, when she applied to colleges we told her we would not co-sign any loans and encouraged her not to go into debt and that if she chose wisely we would pay for her college. She stayed home, in pursing a degree in science and we are paying about 11k a year in tuition. You can get through college without loans. You do have to sacrifice and work hard, but our family is proof that it can be done.

Only if the program involves removing government money from the system entirely, except for ROTC type programs.
