Trump was responding to a Wall Street Journal report that Republican operatives are considering banding together donors from the other GOP campaigns in a bid to knock Trump off the top spot.

Their efforts are taking on increased urgency as the first-in-the-nation Feb. 1 Iowa caucuses near and Trump leads the crowded GOP field for the fourth consecutive month, according to a new national Washington Post-ABC News poll. Some candidates, including Ohio Gov. John Kasich and former Florida governor Jeb Bush, also are showing more willingness lately to directly attack Trump.

What I'm saying s that there AREN'T that many party loyalists. Jeb's at 5-6%, and the others only garner support as long as they're perceived as out of the mainstream.

Stop being so afraid!! The likes of Jeb are no better than hillary is, and the voters realize that.

As I said that is why they call him the “happy warrior.” They have no idea what Trump is doing to them but he does.

Today Trump is the focus of all the attention and he has won yet again.

Look at the ABC interview. I would not be surprised if he told ABC that he would come on if they showed the crowds in his interview. The media never shows the crowds. Here they do. Watching the crowds reminds me of when Obama was running and they showed all his crowds. Made him look good and it makes Trump like the winner. Trump is winning very, very big.

When your own party is trying to bump you off all is fair.

Good for him. With the GOP, we have another Democrat party. We need a two-party system again.

Times have changed from last July.

The difference now is that Trump CAN ACTUALLY WIN if he runs Third Party.

For the GOPe, their BEST course of action is to let Trump have the nomination and then find some disgruntled conservative to run Third Party.

If they do that, then Hillary wins, which to the GOPe is FAR BETTER than Trump becoming President on the Republican Ticket.

(i.e., we have one sick party)

You need to add Yeb, Rubio, a chunk of Carson, Gnarly and the lilliputian anklebiters like Miss Graham and Kasich into those numbers. That is a lot. If it has to be done, it has to be done, but BOTH of the racketeering operations posing as political parties will be on the same page and the dems probably will get 30ish percent of the vote just because their base is servile. The GOP base is less servile, but this thread proves such obsequiousness remains a factor.

Maybe the coronation of Hillary will cause a rift with the Sanders fauxsheviks and create an opportunity. Maybe Trump could secure the largest plurality, or even a majority, but he is not there yet, and to get there, we’d probably have to be on the cusp of civil disorder.

The easiest course right now is to beat down the GOP nomenklatura, HARD. They must be disabused of the notion that their chicanery and obstruction will be tolerated any longer. We’ve suffered a quarter century of GOP misdirection and treachery now.

what can they say or do about Trump that hasn’t been said or done already.

No one cares about nonsense. The country is falling apart.

Didn’t all of the other candidates sign that same “pledge”? Why are they not held to the same standard?

Not going to vote for anyone not named Trump or Cruz, no matter what party they are with.

You'd be happy with a Cruz loss when Trump loses, too, after running 3rd party?

Because I sure wouldn't.

Yup. You hit the nail on the head. That’s why he’s doing this. He has to threaten them - get tough - because they aren’t going to play fair.

The Republican party needs Trump a lot more than he needs them. They need to shape up and support the front runner.

The father of our country:

“I have already intimated to you the danger of parties in the State, with particular reference to the founding of them on geographical discriminations. Let me now take a more comprehensive view, and warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the spirit of party generally.

This spirit, unfortunately, is inseparable from our nature, having its root in the strongest passions of the human mind. It exists under different shapes in all governments, more or less stifled, controlled, or repressed; but, in those of the popular form, it is seen in its greatest rankness, and is truly their worst enemy.

The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries which result gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of public liberty.

Without looking forward to an extremity of this kind (which nevertheless ought not to be entirely out of sight), the common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of party are sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it.

It serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which finds a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another.

There is an opinion that parties in free countries are useful checks upon the administration of the government and serve to keep alive the spirit of liberty. This within certain limits is probably true; and in governments of a monarchical cast, patriotism may look with indulgence, if not with favor, upon the spirit of party. But in those of the popular character, in governments purely elective, it is a spirit not to be encouraged. From their natural tendency, it is certain there will always be enough of that spirit for every salutary purpose. And there being constant danger of excess, the effort ought to be by force of public opinion, to mitigate and assuage it. A fire not to be quenched, it demands a uniform vigilance to prevent its bursting into a flame, lest, instead of warming, it should consume.”

— President George Washington, Farewell Address
