GOP's Carson says he has capacity to learn foreign policy

WILTON, Iowa (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson likens his learning foreign policy to his ability to absorb changing complex medical practices. But Carson is standing by his support for monitoring groups he describes as "anti-American" and keeping Syrian refugees out of the United States.

Carson has been pushed into the spotlight as he's among the leaders in national, and early voting state Republican polls. And yet, some have criticized the retired celebrated neurosurgeon as having insufficient grasp of foreign policy.

Referring to critics, Carson said Sunday at a meeting of about 400 eastern Iowa GOP activists: "They say 'Carson doesn't know anything about foreign affairs.'"

Carson pointed to the continuing medical education all physicians are required to obtain as a sign of his capacity to learn, and said he would seek help from advisers.

"It doesn't matter, because what is really needed is a clear understanding of what the problems are and the ability to work with very talented people that we have," he said. "The world is changing very quickly. We have to be willing to continually update our knowledge and adjust to the things that are going on in our country."

And just who will teach Carson? Obama, Putin, Kerry, or Clinton? Maybe Carson confidant William Armstrong’s friend Louis Farrakhan?

You are right. Trump or Cruz.

But they are not all “dog doo.”

Carson is a fine man. Rand Paul has merit. That doesn’t mean they should be president.

The rest...meh...

I do not know if you are right, but there are less than seven contenders as of now—and the tow best are Cruz and Cruz....maybe Trump....in any order you prefer.

Well, John Effin Kerry knows a lot about foreign policy, does that qualify him to be POTUS?

Cruz never said he was for TPP. He specifically said he had to see what was in it. He said he was a free trader but they didn’t know what it contained. I heard the interview.

I have no idea why you say he was unclear on amnesty.

Further, shall we list the strange things Trump has said and done or let’s just sweep them under the carpet? Maybe we should start with imminent domain.

I’ll vote for Trump but prefer Cruz, but some of the irrational things said by FReepers hurt how others view Trump.

Obama is FAR from bumbling. He is accomplishing everything he told us he would accomplish. Yet, he was elected twice.

Cruz voted to give Obama fast track on both TPP and Iran. Or do you deny he made those votes? His votes supported Obama's deals. Hypocritical of Cruz to now say he objects. Loser argument.

From day one Cruz has said he did not want to discuss what to do with illegal aliens in the US until the border was secure. He is quote on several occasions saying that some form of legalization may be in order. THAT is amnesty.

Too inconvenient for you?

How about his long time support for 500% increase in H1B? If he really objected, would he have waited until now to say so? I doubt it.

The opposition is Hillary. Mr. Carson is not my first choice but is light years ahead of the Hildebeast.

Carson is a fine man.

If I hear "Carson is a fine man" one more time, I'm going to barf.

No, sir. We don’t have time for this. Our country is dying. We need someone already knowledgeable in all aspects of governing. We don’t have time to be his guinea pig while he tries out a new hobby. This isn’t a game. ============================================================ Exactly.

Sorry to cause your barfage, but when a person applies themselves to difficult courses of study and succeeds to
rise to the top of their field on merit, when they are devout
Christians, married to the same woman for many years, and try to encourage to others, I describe them as fine men or women.

What is your definition?

He has indicated he will vote against TPP.

The Iran issue would not have been a problem if they had abided by it. They were not supposed to go forward unless all side deals were revealed and then the majority let it slide. That was the problem.

He has admitted H1-B visas have been abused and he is changing his position. This was at one time a valuable program, but it has been abused and it is probably no longer needed anyway.

I do not believe any man is perfect. Some Trump people seem to have that impression of their candidate who has no record of votes. Yet he certainly has sent some questionable signals. His reaction to Planned Parenthood, statements on Imminent Domain (which you ignored), his admiration of Fiorina and Christie who are not conservatives, talking of single-payer, etc.

Further, there has to be border security before anything is done because people will come right back. Any thinking person knows getting rid of violent illegals and addressing border security are first on the list of priorities, dealing thereafter with otherwise law-abiding illegals.

What is your definition?

Someone who's "best friend" and financier isn't a convicted government fraudster? Someone who isn't totally hypocritical calling for harsh penalties for fraudsters, but testifying on their behalf?

You asked.

True, but he really is a “BUMBLER” and it is others ( Val J. ) who actually do the stuff.

I think it's time for Carson to bow out. The only serious contenders are Trump, Cruz, and Rubio.

And Rubio blew it with his amnesty crap.

I am not seeking perfection in a GOP candidate.

Principally, what I desire is the ability to defeat Hillary Clinton (the presumptive Democratic nominee).

And, judging from the polls that I have seen (together with my knowledge of Marco Rubio's general appeal to women voters), I think that Rubio may be the best candidate, in this regard.
