Obama: Turkey has the right to defend itself and its airspace
CNN ^ | 11/24/15 | Kevin Liptak

Turkey's downing of a Russian fighter plane shouldn't lead to further wartime escalation in the region, President Barack Obama insisted at a press conference Tuesday.

But he maintained Turkey had a right to defend its airspace and charged that Russian air activity near the Turkey-Syria border has been an "ongoing problem."

Do you think that if he does, that would be good or bad for the U.S.?

Neither. Whatever Putin does to Turkey is of no concern. We need to avoid a NATO entanglement but we can use some loophole to get out of that.

Reagan would have said something very similar in defense of the actions of a NATO ally. Obama couldn’t spell NATO or ally if you spotted him half the letters in each.

Turkey is in bed with ISIS, anyone siding with them is in the same bed.

Yep...And Erdogan’s been buying all their oil from ISIS...thus funding Isis.

Erdogan is a key “Manipulator” trying to get Assad dethroned so he can take control.....hopes to get Russia and the US fighting each other.....he’s the worst of them all in this war....cut loose the refugees to force International involvement.....he’s one vile man!

Turkey and Greece are “allies”. It’s not much but it’s better than the alternative.

Turkey and Greece are “allies”.

Like Hitler and Stalin were once "allies."

whoa, obama insisted(!)

Sit up and take note!! He insisted....

if Putin does not get in line, next up is the traditional 'strongly worded letter'..

then we'll see the man that obama is...

My analogy would be Hilter and Petain. Obviously Greece needs Turkey as much as a hole in their heads, but that is what Europe decided to do for now. Later, when Eurabia is fully implemented, Greece will be depopulated and flattened as proof that ancient Greece never existed.

Screw that commie KGB bastard. Putin is not gonna start World War 3 because he knows that a country with a GDP the size of Texas has no chance of surviving let alone winning a nuclear exchange with the US and our European allies. Putin is just as big an asshole as Obama, Erdogan and the leaders of the European NATO countries but Putin fwill not be risking his two months at the dacha for one bomber, all the drama queens here at FR not withstanding.

"I heard that the U.S. removed it's patriot air defense system from Turkey a couple months ago? Why didn't the SU-24 drop flares and chaff if being followed by F-16's? They obviously didn't anticipate such Turkish aggression.."

I think you're right. They were just as surprised as everyone else, just like it probably did not cross their minds that the Turks would shoot them in their parachute descent, or blow up their rescue helicopter. It is really hard to believe, isn't it?

I didn't say Putin was going to start WW III. Previous World Wars (WW I and WW II) did not start all at once. They started when one "small provocation" led to another bigger reaction, and an escalation here, and an expansion to other countries there, etc.

I said that it is almost a certainty that Putin will respond (and respond strongly) to this Turkish provocation. Do you honestly think Putin won't respond to this Russian jet, pilot, and rescue helicopter being shot down/blown up??

If he does respond, there will either be a NATO response (including the U.S.) to the Russian action, or there won't be a NATO response to the Russian action against the Turks. If there is a NATO response...

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Now do you honestly think that Obama "the leaflet bomber" is ready to go toe-to-toe with any other powerful country, like Russia?

Both the U.S. and our European allies are in a very weakened state at the moment. (If you don't believe that, think about how we are doing with that ISIS bunch.) We need new leadership and new approaches, and we need them fast.

Putin learned a valuable lesson. No matter how much you think you are safe or in an 'alliance' with Muslims, they will turn on you and SLIT YOUR THROAT when the time is right.

I am reminded of the Islamo-whacko dad who murdered his two daughters in the car because they had Infidel guy friends. THIS HAPPENED IN AMERICA.

I agree. If WWIII starts in an abrupt way, there is NO WAY America survives with 0dunga in the WH. Survival is only assured if he is removed from office BEFORE the WWIII bell rings.

0dunga says Islamo-Turkey is right to "defend their airspace". WHAT ABOUT OUR AIRSPACE, Russia violates it every week!

Also, remember that a half hour or so BEFORE the attack on Benghazi Ambassador Stevens had a meeting with a representative of TURKEY? Hmmmm..

Russia was not the aggressor against Turkey before or during this incident. So then perhaps the TOW-shot at the disabled RESCUE helicopter is a war crime? Using American weapons no less, while muttering “Allahu Akbar” every other breath. WE SHOULD NOT BE ARMING THESE PIG SWINE VERMINS!!!

Yes, but they don't have the right to violate the Geneva Conventions and shoot pilots parachuting out of disabled airplanes.

"But, they're Infidels.."
