...thinking similar...this guy is an IDIOT!

He may well get a lesson about how the Russians play, possibly a deadly one.

He just removed everyone in the chain of command that could at least be accused of making an error. This puts it at the top just escalating everything.

Alliances are gonna show...

I guess. Since the Trurks actually shot this pilot down in SYRIAN airspace. Even NATO told them to back off.

But the problem is that the Turks want to provoke something because they have bizarre apocalyptic beliefs about the triumph of Islam through the revival of the Ottoman Empire - and even ISIS wants to be in Constantinople, aka, Istanbul.

Well if your knickers are in a twist over this "violation" what do you do? You cannot embarrass the Russians with a 4-fighter perp-walk out of their airspace because the plane already left their air space. So, your other choice is to deliver a strongly worded diplomatic note of protest that you do not take these things lightly and you will be watching for future such incursions.

Or you chase the plane and shoot it down after it is gone to send a clear message. A clear message was indeed sent - Erdogan and Obama are idiot children who are going to start WWIII if their adult minders cannot get them under control.

The Russians are chess-masters, and will have mastered one set of chess moves

Do this again and they will find themselves swindled out of a squadron of their best fighters. "You shot at our aircraft in our airspace and we have to act in self-defense. You said so yourself. So sorry.

Russia would do the same thing.

Russia would not do the same. KL-007 was a huge f-up and everyone knows it on both sides. We and the Russians have been playing cat and mouse games at each other's boarders since before the end of WWII with fighters, with bombers, with ships, with submarines and with spies. 99.99% of the time you chase the other side off, and it never goes hot. Checking each other out is what you do - but no sane person wants to start WWIII over it.

This guy is not very smart... We have seen what Putin does to people he dislikes in his own country. I would suspect that the Turkish PM is about to have an accident.

He might want to watch out for people with umbrellas.

Well, when Russia opens up its air space, they might have a basis to complain about not being able to use the air space of others. I do not think it would be safe to fly over any portion of Russian air space. I really think that Putin believed that the Turks would be afraid to stand up to him and now he probably does not know what to do. He probably had not thought that far down the line. I do not think that Putin has ever been real good at making decisions.

Are you implying that Vladimir Putin himself communicated with the pilot of the Su-25 and instructed him to breach the Turkish border?

That would surprise me. I doubt that he talks to pilots much.

I would not be surprised to find out that this was not the first occasion that a Russian jet toyed with Turkish soil, that the Turks complained, that Putin learned about those complaints and that Putin thought that those complaints were humorous but that Turkey would not do anything about these incursions.

Another possibility is that Putin's incompetence led to such poor training for pilots that they did not know exactly where they were flying.

Something went wrong and I am sure that Putin would be man enough to say that the buck stops with him, that he is responsible for the screwup.
