Russia Suspends Visa-Free Travel With Turkey

Russia announced Friday that it will suspend visa-free travel with Turkey amid the escalating spat over the downing of a Russian warplane by a Turkish fighter jet at the Syrian border.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that Moscow will halt the existing visa-free regime starting Jan. 1, saying that Turkey has become a conduit for terrorists and has been reluctant to share information with Moscow about Russian citizens accused of involvement in terrorist activities.

Turkey's downing of the Russian military jet Tuesday, the first time in half a century that a NATO member shot down a Russian plane, has drawn a harsh response from Moscow. Russia has since restricted tourist travel, left Turkish trucks stranded at the border, confiscated large quantities of Turkish food imports and started preparing a raft of broader economic sanctions.

I wonder if Turkey is now upset they poked the bear in the eye now?

I honestly don't believe they're smart enough to be concerned.

All they had to do was look across the Med to see what Qaddafi got for complete cooperation with the US for a decade.

Turkey will look like Libya.

Thanks, Sac,

My goodness, "Arab Spring" is all over the middle East, crossing the Suez, and leaking around the Eastern end of the Med, and Obama and company have had nothing to do with the unrest in Turkey, ... or Egypt for that matter.

Love the way CSM polishes Obama's ...

I hope the Russians take the Turks out, and get bloodied badly in the process . . . so they realize how incompetent they are, and FReepers will stop with the “poking the Bear” BS.

I have read all the actions Russia has taken in the past few days after their plane was hit and the Turks shot one of the pilots who bailed out. Putin has already taken so many actions against Turkey, they are too many to list. Some of them are:

Sent empty planes to Turkey to pick up all Russian citizens who were there on vacation. Russian travel agents won't schedule any more Russians to go there. Travel from Turkey into Russia is stopped.

Gathered up all Turkish products in Russia. No more food will be imported from Turkey.

Shut down all construction in Turkey entered into by Turkey and Russia.

Attacked and killed Turkmen enclaves near Turkey's border and into Turkey.

Moved a ship near Turkey with ability to shoot down any Turkish plane. Stationed ground units able to shoot down Turkish planes, so they can do it from ground or water.

Now, Turkey gets gas from Russia but I haven't read they have closed that off - yet.

Why would Russians want to vacation in Turkey when they have Siberian beaches in their own backyard?
