The University of Chicago has canceled all classes and activities at its Hyde Park campus after being warned by the FBI of an online threat of gun violence there.

In an alert sent out to the campus community, university president Robert Zimmer said FBI counterterrorism officials said the threat, posted by an unknown individual, specifically mentioned "'the campus quad' on Monday morning at 10 a.m."

"Based on the FBI's assessment of this threat and recent tragic events at other campuses across the country, we have decided in consultation with federal and local law enforcement officials, to exercise caution by canceling all classes and activities on the Hyde Park campus through midnight on Monday," Zimmer said.

The University is surrounded by bad neighborhoods on three sides and Lake Michigan on the forth.

I taught at SIU and bomb threats were common during mid terms and finals.

No kidding those are bad neighborhoods. Hyde Park used to be a jewel. I was driving near by there one time in the mid 90s and this Buckwheat looking character was very slowly walking across the street to make the white guy stop. He stopped in front of me and slowly turned and raised his shirt to reveal a pistol in his waste band. I kept the accelerator covered determined the pistol would never clear his trousers. He dropped his shirt and walked off. Toilet of a neighborhood.

It is sad about Hyde Park. There is Robie House, A Frank Lloyd Wright designed house and the Museum of Science and Industry located there.

I can’t recall any of these phone in or emailed threats being carried on to fruition. They have, however, cost cumulative millions of dollars and disrupted learning and activities.

I’ve never even heard of such a thing. I did go into a store in a bad part of Indianapolis in the 1990s and the clerk was sitting behind bullet proof glass.

I went to a rodeo in Hoopa, CA. It is on a reservation. The sign at the only quickie mart said “No fighting” NOT no loitering. we didn’t stay after my round.

Kenwood isn't THAT bad, especially near the lake. A lot of people (including women) live on 51st/Hyde Park Blvd., and it isn't awful, unless its gone downhill the last few years.

I lived in the Shoreland dorm, which was on 55th and S. Shore, but I also lived on 53rd and Kenwood (reputedly Obama lived in the same area after I left). The worst was 54th and Maryland (West side). Cottage Grove really is a line of demarcation.
