WISCONSIN (WBAY) -- Every hunter remembers their first buck and the story of how they got it. But a 10-year-old boy from Wisconsin had a rare experience that some may call beginner's luck.
"I wanted to go hunting this year because I really wanted a deer," said 10-year-old Kyler Verbeten.
Kyler went out hunting Sunday with his dad, with his gun for the first time.
"This squirrel kept distracting me, so I kept watching the squirrel," said Kyler. "The squirrel was just jumping from tree to tree, everything. It was just doing weird stuff."
Kyler and his dad eventually saw two deer in the woods.
"I said, shoot the big doe, because there was a smaller one," said Matt Verbeten, Kyler's dad. "He had the gun, and I'm kind of laughing, we'll see how he does, he's 10..."
Kyler's first shot missed the target.
"I said, 'Shoot again,' he puts it back up, BOOM. They just fell right over," said Matt.
Kyler's second bullet hit and killed two deer, the shot going through both animals.
"I was so excited I almost jumped out of the stand," said Kyler, "I just ran down the ladder and ran out there to look at them."
Kyler's dad helped him gun and drag the deer, and used his own tag, along with Kyler's, since they weren't planning on Kyler shooting two deer.
His dad says besides a one-of-a-kind first experience, he hopes Kyler takes away a lesson from the woods.
"Just for kids nowadays to get the value of nature, to get outside and do something," said Matt. "There's not an app for something like that."
Kyler says he'll sit with his dad and his brothers the rest of the season, and will definitely be back for more next year.
"Are you going to get three with one shot next year?" we asked Kyler.
"Probably...maybe, I don't know. Probably not," Kyler said.
I love animals, too. I really like them medium rare, with mashed taters and green beans.
Drag #1 out and go back for #2. Tagged legally, though.
***********************
How do you do “legal” with one tag, two deer? In the story, they both had tags, but my point was what if dad, who seemed amused by his kid shooting a deer with another directly behind it, didn’t have his own tag? #3 below - dad needs a refresher & the kid needs to learn not to shoot if something is behind his target.
Remember the Four Rules of Firearm Safety (per WI regs):
1. Treat every gun as if it were loaded.
2. Always point the muzzle in a safe direction.
3. Be sure of your target and beyond.
4. Keep your finger out of the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot
The lesson is be sure what you are aiming at, and what's behind what you are aiming at. I don't know what the law is in WI, here in CA it's illegal to use your tag on a deer someone else shot. Dad could be getting a call from the DFG.
You would prefer they starve? Because without hunting they will overbreed beyond the capacity of the land to feed them and starve. Or reintroduce alpha predators into areas with human populations. Want a wolf pack or a mountain lion living in your yard?
And people do eat what they shoot. Animals that died to put meat in a store not only died a worse death, they lived a worse life. Personally I would prefer to hunt all my meat, but it’s not practical for me.
I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt on the first post. I figured it was unlabeled sarcasm.
I see now that I was wrong.
Are you stupid (IQ <100) or are you merely ignorant?
Wow. Nothing like tripling down on the ignorance. (Or is it stupidity?)
Here's a funny one for you: I'm a definite carnivore, but my belt and shoes are both made of nylon (and some synthetic rubber, and some metal ...)
Oh drop it. I’ve done the same thing in the brush in PA. It probably wasn’t a GD gun range. If you have a flat shooting high powered rifle it can happen. I dragged my first one out, ran into town and got my mother a license and dragged the second out. Use your head just a little bit. There were no buildings, people or towns for miles.
What a story. Reading it, I can’t help but wonder.....in 30 years, will this be Kyler’s ultimate hunt? Or will he be a legendary hunting guide with his own TV show...the guy who killed two on his first hunt with one bullet?
I love animals too but deer are not endangered, not even close.

See my bio page and find out what native Texas animals are near extinction because of man.

'Putting meat on the table' is wearing rather thin. Hunting is only an excuse to stalk and kill and 'impress' your friends. There's meat at the grocery store.
And yes, my father brought his 'kills' home and my mother cooked it- reluctantly. She said it stunk up the house.
She didn't like venison and neither did I (that was back when I ate meat and was probably responsible for my revulsion at eating meat.
I don't think even my father liked it. It was just the way he was raised; go out and kill deer and other animals. Big macho man.
Hunting is the way modern MEN honor our heritage by acknolaging our history of having to go out, kill, butcher and prepare food for our family. I hunt and kill. I also garden, raise chickens, even raised 3 pigs for the freezer. I’m an engineer / project manager. Should I just drive a Beemer, drink Starbucks and wear sandles ? I am a omnivore. My creator made me that way. Should I shun that because Im affluent, educated, modern? Or should I celibrate that buy hunting, gardening, herding and working in the modern world? Should I teach my kids the tough idea of where meat comes from? Should I make them idiots and deny them who they are and who their creator made them to be? Hunting isn’t bad. Are there idiots - yes but the hunters are more in tune IMHO.
I’d probably be more impressed if they hadn’t been a couple of does.
Post 64 on a thread about deer: “See my bio page to observe our endangered animals and what we are doing to help them: “
Deer aren’t endangered.
Your mention of endangered anything is irrelevant.
Fine, you don’t like hunting.
Big whoop.
Just because YOU dislike it doesn’t mean it should be done away with.
That’s the same tortured “logic” the left uses to go after firearms ownership.
“I dislike guns therefore all guns must be banned.”
If a conservative dislikes something, he doesn’t do it.
When a liberal dislikes something, they not only want it banned, but they must shove it in everyone’s face and force acceptance of their position or else.
Group hunting is an old tradition in Wisconsin. As long as they’re in voice or visual contact, the group’s tags are essentially collective. Using dad’s tag would be ok

—So true it deserves a repost.
So I gather what you are saying is the only way to protect the border is to shoot the invaders? I don’t recall advocating that nor do my words point to shooting anything as a course of action.
Of course I am open minded.
:-)
We are not at the “let God sort’em out” point.....YET!
Jedi.
