Turkey to act 'patiently' before taking any measures against Russia: Erdogan

urkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday his government would act "patiently and not emotionally" before taking any measures in response to Russia's decision to impose sanctions on Turkey.

Moscow said earlier in the day that it would ban mainly imports of agricultural products from Turkey after the Turkish military downed a Russian warplane on Nov. 24 which Ankara said had breached Turkish airspace while flying missions in Syria.

"Let's act patiently and not emotionally," Erdogan told reporters when asked whether Turkey would hit back with its own sanctions. "Let's let their chips fall as they may, then if we have our own chips, we'll let those fall."

Erdogan was speaking in comments broadcast live by CNN Turk television on the sidelines of a climate summit in Paris, where efforts to bring him together with Russian President Vladimir Putin failed.

Turkey was working to ensure ties with Russia, its main energy supplier, do not rupture completely, Erdogan said, describing Moscow as a "strategic partner."

I agree with you. Turn off the gas pipeline. See how the Turks like shivering through the winter.

Sorry Erdogan...you made your move, Vlad gets to make the next move. I don't think you're gonna like it.

“Turkey hosts pipelines that Russia uses and needs to transport its product to Europe, so it can do nothing without cornholing its customers”

And then the Cornholees contact Turkey and bring pressure on them.
And as for Turkey making up the difference from Iran and Iraq, you might check to see who is protecting them from ISIS lately.

Few pipelines through Turkey, most of Russia's gas exports pass through Ukraine and onto Europe.

Additionally, while Turkey get much of it's oil elsewhere, it get most of it's gas from Russia.

I look forward to the day that the Turkish military finally figures they've had enough and stands Erdogan before a firing squad.

Erdogan cashiered a lot of senior officers right after he was elected. The Army let him do it because they wanted to get Turkey accepted into the EU and any show of undemocratic tendencies would have ruined their chances. Now it's not at all clear the army can still pull off a coup.

Armies have institutional memory. They know what they can do. And when to do it.
Erdogan is looking at a coup. And afterwards, Turkey will explode.

Also known as "whistling past the graveyard".

Unfortunate if true. At one time, they had, man for man, one of the best armies in the world. Their exploits in the Korean War are still legendary among our army vets who fought alongside them.

Add the recent assassination of leading opposition leader and arrests of journalists, I’d say the pot is simmering.

Yippy ought to be concerned about Russia taking steps against Turkey.

So is Russia. So is Iran. So is Syria. So is ISIS. They are all enemies of the US. You may as well toss Iraq in there now too.

This is why the Russians invaded Ukraine - to stop the pipeline going to Europe. Russia is nothing more than a non-Islamic petro-state.

"Russia is the enemy of the US"
How so ?

Indeed, the US was allied with Russia in both world wars and Russia was indispensable in the defeat of the Fascist Axis.

Maybe a few oil tankers should “have an Accident” after they leave port. Those oil tankers can just “blow up” for almost any reason—Turks are not know to take good care of their ships.

Wrong, and no one would say that and believe it. If Russia cuts off the copious (3%) of Turkish oil, it will be via the pipelines; Russia needs those pipelines to keep carrying their product, so after a period of pissing and moaning like the little bitch that he is, Pooty will back down.

> you might check to see who is protecting them from ISIS lately.

Right back at ya.

Russia’s planes were attacking Turkomen who are Syrian citizens (or rather were, because Syria ceased to exist over four years ago, when Assad started gunning down Syrians) and not in ISIS; Turkey warned your hero Pooty-Poot, so he doubled down and ordered the planes to violate Turkish airspace. Russia got off light losing just one plane. Pooty-Poot ordered strikes on trucks of food and other non-lethal supplies, headed for the Turkomen that Russia had been bombing.
