Kyri Viehman came out of the Michael's Craft store after buying Christmas decorations in Fenton, Missouri, to find a $100 bill tucked under her windshield wiper blade. Unfortunately for her, the bill was a fake and part of a scam to lure potential victims out of their cars to rob them.
In the case of Viehman, it wasn't until after a few minutes of driving down the road that she did what most people would do: get out of the car and focus on not letting that $100 bill blow away.
A note on the fake bill said:
"Ha you thought this was real didn't you?"
After researching on the Internet, she found that this was a common tactic for criminals. They plant the fake bill on a car, wait in the car next to that car, and hope that someone gets out of the car when they return from shopping.
At that point the criminal will rob the unsuspecting and distracted shopper, sometimes with a child to further distract them, and the criminal is gone without having to lure a victim out of the car or worry about giving a victim time to prepare against a mugging.
Viehman had her son in the car.
She posted a picture and her story on her Facebook account to give people a heads-up this Christmas shopping season. Protecting yourself against theft takes many forms, of course, but Viehman is calling on shoppers to be careful about their surroundings and always think about safety, even in what they may consider a safe place.

Why wouldn’t they rob you when you’re walking up to the car?
I’ve seen the same sort of scam with cans tied to the tail pipe. A person’s reaction, when they hear the rattle is to get out to check. The thief then gets in the car and drives away with whatever you have placed in the car.
The only solution is to keep driving until well away, then check.

Doesn’t pass the smell test. You don’t have to wait to see if someone gets out of their car after shopping because they are already out of the car FROM SHOPPING.

Sounds like an urban legend. This is a ridiculous story.
Why not remove that bill immediately before getting into the car? I don't understand why someone would drive, then stop and remove it. Is this what people do when they get a parking ticket?
If you encounter a car with the high beams on, DO NOT flash yours back. It is a gang initiation.
Once I was parked in front of Goldblatts store on SE side of Chicago, waiting for my wife to come out of the store. A male Hispanic rapped on my side window, I lowered the window 2 inches to hear him, and he asked if I had lost my drivers license. I guess he expected me to pull wallet out of my pockets to check.
But little did he know I grew up in the city of pick pockets and purse snatchers, Mumbai, India. I told him I do not have a drivers license, I am a foreign student and do not need a license. I closed my car window, and away he went.
Wow. Smart, quick thinking!
Awfully elaborate scam that would leave a lot to chance.
A new year a new scam. Its never ending.
I always flash high beams to an on coming car to warn traffic cop ahead waiting for speeders, on 2 lane highways. I do not belong to any gang, but I did serve local republican party as precinct representative for a few years.
