Beijing factories shut amid smog nightmare

Beijing ordered hundreds of factories to shut and allowed children to skip school as choking smog reached over 25 times safe levels on Tuesday, casting a cloud over China's participation in Paris climate talks.

A thick grey haze shrouded the capital with concentrations of PM 2.5, harmful microscopic particles that penetrate deep into the lungs, as high as 634 micrograms per cubic metre.

The reading given by the US embassy dwarfs the maximum recommended by the World Health Organisation, which is just 25 micrograms per cubic metre

Nice. As they're filthy factories churn out millions of counterfeit US goods from sports jerseys to Apple stores.

This is why the West can't really be serious about climate change talks. Until China and India do their part, it's fruitless to strap our businesses with more crushing regulation.

The climate change talks are not about ‘climate change’. They are about the destruction of freedom, capitalism, and individual choice.

Having traveled in *southern* China a number of times, including several times in the last 4 years,I can attest to the fact that the *clearest* day,pollution-wise,that I've ever seen there was *far* worse than the *worst* day I've ever seen in London,Germany,NYC,LA,Ohio,Pennsylvania, etc, etc.

I travel for business in China and India. The air pollution is unbelievable. They are not going to stop using cheap coal without scrubbers.

Hate to see the number of cases of lung cancer in these countries in the next thirty years.

Their is not such thing as air pollution control in either country.

Climate Change will create a $10T market out of thin air. This isn’t about a cleaner planet. It’s about making a commodity to be traded of carbon.

Me too — In Shanghai you can look directly at the sun in midday, without a cloud in the sky. Not that I recommend doing it....

Under the proposed global agreement for control of greenhouse gasses China will be allowed to double their emissions before peaking around 2035, since they are a “developing” country.

Careful there. You’re making it sound like regulation of air pollution is a good thing.

I have been all over China over the past 25 years, and what you say is absolutely correct. Oh, the joys of living in a socialist country!

CO2 is clear, isn't a component of smog and certainly doesn't cause respiratory problems. This air pollution is the old-fashioned kind that's a result of industrial activity that doesn't use scrubbers to keep the air clean. Ultimately, the Chinese government has decided that industrial competitiveness requires that it turns a blind eye to air pollution. The difficulty for China's current supremo, Xi Jinping, is that his predecessors could have mandated smog pollution controls when the economy was growing in the low teens, and the cost might have taken growth into the high single digits. Now that it is either growing in the low single digits or not growing at all, Xi is hard-put to clamp down on pollution, lest he takes the economy into recession, resulting in potential social unrest and his removal from power by his Party rivals.

Thank GOD. China will make up for all the lack of pollution in America.

Pollution makes children grow strong.

Climate change is a manufactured screwjob designed to allow government to steal money from people and business in the name of the environment.

One of my kids was in China for a while... in southern China, near Guangzho. He said that one day, the winds shifted so that the normally hazy sky cleared, and a normal sunset was visible. People were out in the streets and on rooftops with cameras taking pictures, because it was so unusual!

Mexico City, because of altitude, terrain, and huge population was and is bad. But it’s like being in a pristine forest glen compared with Beijing on a bad day. They closed all those factories for a few weeks before the 2008 Olympics in order to avoid exposing the athletes and to, as usual for a totalitarian regime (Hitler had all the anti-Semitic signs removed in Berlin before the 1936 games), put on a happy mask before the world.

Ever tried to breathe much of it?

Every single minute of every single day. Atmospheric air is 0.039% CO2. I breathe even more nitrogen (78% of atmospheric air).

Not the phones here. In China. They built an entire counterfeit Apple Store filled with bogus product. It’s an easy Google.
