They take a lot of effort to cock and have a very hard trigger pull, which makes it very hard to accidently fire one.

Be sure to pattern the PDF or any other shot shells at several distances on cardboard or something. (they also shoot .410 shotgun shells) so if you're shooting at a car jacker or rattle snake you have an idea where to aim so you don't accidently do a Dick Cheney and put some pellets in a friend or your own foot or leg.

Agree about the JUDGE. Yes it is big and heavy, but the western style belt holster did it for me...at home and in time of trouble I will be happy to have and wear it.

I love those. A Korean War vet told me they don’t have much stopping power though. Just repeating what he said. I don’t know. I kept one in a shop once where we were all expected to be armed. Love them.

For many years I owned 7 Swedish Mausers including an early one actually made in Oberndorf. 3 were 29 inch barrels, 3 were 24 inch barrels and one was around 16-17 inch.

At one time I probably had two thousand rounds of various ammo for it. I still have maybe 40 boxes of the Lapua and maybe 20 of the Norma. Also maybe 3 or 4 various odds and ends.

These fine rifles of which I now have exactly one, will still hit a man sized target at 500 yards with open sights and it is not that hard to do as they are just about dead on at that distance. My Nephew who is a mediocre shot could hit a 20 X 12 inch tar bucket at 400 yards nearly every time.

This is one of those types of questions that garner a myriad of answers.

Have you ever shot a firearm before in your life?
Is it home defense, or all around, no matter where you are, defense?
What is your budget standing you to afford?
Are there others in your family that are of age to learn firearm safety, and the correct usage of a firearm?

What is your fancy: revolvers, semi-automatic pistols, ‘coach-style’ shotguns, semi-automatic shotguns, bolt-action rifles, cowboy-style lever action rifles, or semi-automatic rifles?

IF you have never fired a firearm, i would NOT suggest a revolver chambered in .357 Magnum or larger, at first.

Lastly, -A- gun beats -NO- gun.

Any dependable .308 semiauto does the job at all ranges, though a shotgun is nice to have at hand indoors when you do not want to worry how many houses you will ventilate downrange.

When I have silhouette targets, always practice head shots.

G Gordon Liddy preached this decades ago, knowing how the JBT and bad guys were all going to be wearing that stuff.

Current SOP is to aim for the pelvis in case of body armor. It dismantles the body and renders it immobile very quickly. Easier to score hits than the head.

I need one gun, of at least center fire power, and one bullet.

The real question should be which one, and how often will I need to shoot it? ;)

I prefer my 30. Easier to hold, ten rounds, less recoil impulse. Handled the 36, hands just to big, did not like the little finger dangling in the air.

Think I have seen a lot of JBT armor that hangs quite low.

Considering the target may be unknown, the head is always reliable. I am good for that out to a good distance. A femur shot is a nice backup.
