Hard to say. How many and how powerful were the guns used to bring down the two Muslim terrorists in San Bernardino?
What if it is just you standing in defense of your family?
That'd be the model 20. I'm growing very fond of mine. Only one spare mag and I've got 30 rounds. Just a touch bulky, though, and I still haven't found the perfect holster.
Given the choice, I'll opt for a long gun every time. An AR with a red dot will take me to 200 meters. Outside of that it isn't self-defense anymore - I'm hunting Johnny Jihadi, he isn't hunting me, and I have plenty of hunting rifles that will get me there. Those are just my personal solutions. YMMV
3 guns
Glock 27 - Small, Concealable, Powerful and High Capacity
Mossberg 500
AR 15 in 6.8 SPC
I carry a .45 ACP backed by many practice sessions. My choice of long guns has to be my Henry Big Boy in .44 Magnum. It is so easy to hit a target with it.
Saving for pings. Thanks!
If I remember right, it took 6 or 8 shots by an experienced professional in Ferguson to bring down one determined criminal who was charging head down like an enraged bull with murder in his eye.
This.

For close range you need a 9 mm or.38 or better and a 12 gauge shot gun. For 50 yards, you need a AR15 .223 and 3 30 round clips. Round count depends on your attacker. The main thing is 1000 rounds ( minimum) in practice at a range or ranch. Shoot until your hand bleed. Find out your sights and grip. You must learn squeeze pressure- it is smooth and light. If you over squeeze ,you pull the barrel down. Shoot standing, crouching and laying prone. Try to shoot a moving target, especially with the semi .223.
You should have a 12 gauge with the plug removed at your house. (I have 5 rounds #4 duck shot and the wide choke— it will tear their ass in half) ) Use the pistol to get to the 12 gauge. Shoot through walls and doors with that semi pistol if you know they are there. . Have 2 reloads on both the pistol and shotgun handy. If you are married train your wife to back up. ( SHE MUST TRAIN WITH YOU.
The BEST weapon is to obtain license ( federal ) for a short barreled rifle!! ( SBR) This is a pistol grip rifles with 18” barrel and a 30round semi mags.
Here is what you better not do!! ___ NOTHING!! If you kill an intruder ,tell the officers ZERO. obtain a lawyer ( have one in mind) all communication is through that lawyer. SAY NOTHING BUT “I will call my lawyer and thank you for your public service.” If they ask to search your house— Say , “only with a warrant” , they can then search — “I want a lawyer now”. DO NOT TALK!!
Finally, I want to tell to where to shoot the bad guy. Two quick rounds in the hips. Biggest target. That will drop him . Move up 2 rounds in the torso to the heart/chest region. The last two are in the skull. Have no damned mercy. God Bless you. Be tough. ( you make your own luck)
And I would add that it’s NONE OF YOUR DAMN BUSINESS!
That was the question. I think anyone in that room that fired back with skill could have diminished the outcome.
If not, then pass the weapon to your next compadre to chase them out.
I carry 15 rounds for my Shield. 7 in, 8 in extra mag. If that’s all I got, it will have to do. Everything else pinches me when I’m on Free Republic. Can’t tolerate that.
I was going to attend a local gun show this weekend and sell the Mossy 500, +rounds mag tube, collapsible pistol grip stock, rail on the hand-guard with folding vertical grip (to minimize short shucking under stress) I outfitted. It’s also parkerized. But after San Berno it was handwriting on the wall that the regime will ratchet up the controls. May never get the opportunity to acquire one of those again, so I’m keeping it.
What do I feel I need? Something I can conceal when out. Something more significant at home. I keep a loaded Mossberg 12 on one side of my bed, a loaded AR15 (with 30 round mag) on the wife’s side. There is always a 9mm or 45 ACP (1911) within arms reach while I’m home. I think that is pretty well protected against issues in town or things that go bump in the night.
Rifle:
Springfield Armory MiA .308 and at least 10 loaded mags Primary Ruger Ranch Rifle .223 scoped 3-9X with at least 10 loaded mags
Shotgun:
Mossberg 500 12 ga,pump cylinder choke, 3 in mag, 18" bbl, 5+1 capacity, 6 rd side ammp holder, Buckshot and slugs - Primary
Browning BPS normal 12 ga - Backup
Handgun:
Colt 1911 45 ACP and multiple spare loaded mags. And I would have spare guns for every caliber listed for additional backup.
I understand your point.
However, one can only speculate what may have happened if they’d met armed resistance. Even if just one of them had been taken down would the other have continued? Hard to say.
Yes that 8mm is about as good as it gets. I was thinking of recoil and having quick follow up shots.
I guess what I say and what I do are different things as that 8mm Mauser is in another room. Within six feet is my old Remington 552 speedmaster loaded with 14 rounds of high speed .22lr. That old .22 auto is almost off the charts accurate and in all these years has never failed.
Still it would be extremely slow to reload that tubular magazine. I have been wanting another Ruger 10-22 for several years and will probably get one before too long.
Come to think of it, I might just load up that old Mauser and keep it handy too. Slow to reload but I could keep a few loaded stripper clips near at hand. I guess the Swedish Mauser would be just as good with slightly less recoil. I still have a pile of Lapua match for it. FMJ but with that much power it doesn’t matter.

Probably correct Jim.
My 22lr placed on their skull might have got one and blown up their entire Muslim Rampage.
