I have one of those M1As in the National Match Loaded version. Bought a crap load of 20 round mags before they passed the mag capacity laws here in Colorado. Here is my list:
Rifle:
Springfield Armory MiA .308 and at least 10 loaded mags Primary Ruger Ranch Rifle .223 scoped 3-9X with at least 10 loaded mags
Shotgun:
Mossberg 500 12 ga,pump cylinder choke, 3 in mag, 18" bbl, 5+1 capacity, 6 rd side ammp holder, Buckshot and slugs - Primary
Browning BPS normal 12 ga - Backup
Handgun:
Colt 1911 45 ACP and multiple spare loaded mags. And I would have spare guns for every caliber listed for additional backup.

My favorite gun, right out of the box.
No scope.
No jewelry...

I love those. A Korean War vet told me they don’t have much stopping power though. Just repeating what he said. I don’t know. I kept one in a shop once where we were all expected to be armed. Love them.

+1
Any dependable .308 semiauto does the job at all ranges, though a shotgun is nice to have at hand indoors when you do not want to worry how many houses you will ventilate downrange.
