Watching Greenland melt from Paris
CNN ^ | 12-8-15 | John Sutter

Olafur Eliasson, an Icelandic-Danish artist who lassoed and transported tons of ice from Greenland to Paris for a new climate change-inspired exhibit, bets you haven't.

"The truth is the ice is amazing. It's so touching to look at," he told me, standing in front of 12 hunks of Greenland that glittered blue-white in front of the Pantheon in Paris. The ice blocks -- totaling nearly 100 tons, he told me -- are arranged in the shape of a clock. You can see streaks of air and tiny bubbles in the ice. Put your ear to it, as I did at Eliasson's suggestion, and you hear a faint crackling sound. "It's a little concert," he said. "It's a little ice concert."

The outdoor exhibit, called Paris Ice Watch, is meant to focus the world's attention on the increasingly ephemeral nature of these amazing ice hunks. Not too far away, in a Parisian suburb, officials from 195 countries are meeting at the U.N. COP21 climate change summit to try to figure out how to curb the most disastrous consequences of global warming.

Paris Ice Watch is a reminder that the ice is melting as they talk.

It’s one of the dumbest ideas the warministas have had in some time, bringing ice out of the arctic to show that it can melt somewhere else — does that not drive home the concept that the ice probably would not be melting if it was back home in Greenland? Duh!

They need a large hockey stick on top of the ice.

Anyone asking why some 1,000 years ago the Vikings found Greenland a hospitable place to live with a climate not unlike Norway?

What was the carbon footprint of harvesting, transporting and cold-storing the ice until they got it to Paris?

Please. The show would be even better if you transported ice to Florida or Palm Springs, CA. How dramatic. That “exhibit” could give al gore a fever or make polar bears have heart attacks.

1942-—P38 Lightning, now called Glacier Girl———lands on the Greenland ice cap with five other P38s and two B17s.

1992-— Glacier girl is recovered from under 280 feet of ice. 280 feet accumulation in fifty years. Clearly the ice had been heavily melting in that span.

Fairly substantial, I would think. But how often to get such a big chance to impress all those climate change whores and get your mugg on CNN?

Probably a combination of ice and snow build-up during colder months and the planes sinking through the ice when the weather is warmer.

In 1988, two explorers sponsored by the Greenland Expedition Society finally found a lead. Patrick Epps and Richard Taylor led an expedition to the the ice cap which used steam to bore a hole and locate airplane parts buried under the Greenland ice. The two men found that in the forty-six years since the planes had crash-landed, an astonishing 268 feet of ice had accumulated over them, and they had been carried three miles by the drifting glacier.

But but but but Fred that cannot possibly be. We all know the ice has been melting away due to AGW.
