Trump brings up Cruz's Cuban ancestry at rally
Business Insider ^ | 12/11/2016 | Colin Campbell

Real-estate mogul Donald Trump contrasted his own "evangelical" beliefs with US Sen. Ted Cruz's (R-Texas) religious beliefs at a Friday-night campaign rally.

"I am an evangelical. I'm a Christian. I'm a Presbyterian," Trump said, speaking in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Republican presidential front-runner then highlighted the fact that Cruz's father is Cuban.

"We're doing really well with the evangelicals," he continued. "And by the way, and again, I do like Ted Cruz, but not a lot of evangelicals come out of Cuba, in all fairness. It's true. Not a lot come out. But I like him nevertheless."

Read the article and get off my back.

You guys squeal about flip flopping constantly, and then can’t take it when someone shows you your guy does it too.

Still doesn’t mean much to me. I’ve never seen the movie.

Take off, pal - from your posting history on this subject it is obvious you have no interest in an honest debate. I’m not interested in your adolescent games.

Since when has Trump been an evangelical? I never heard him profess his faith before he started campaigning. Does he talk about it in Art of the Deal? I would seriously feel a lot better about Trump, if he had been a little more outspoken about his current views, if he had supported Conservative causes before he decided to run as the most conservative candidate ever.

Good post, I agree.

But, I think this latest remark by Trump won’t help him at all. It seems inappropriate and frankly somewhat bizarre. It could easily end up a plus for Cruz.

Just wait until his campaign staff starts quitting and resign in droves, that should give them plenty to cry about.

“Ted Cruz did not come out of Cuba. And what the heck is Trump even talking about?”

This is what Trump does - pitches out words that are not true about a rival, but puts in one or two words to connect to the rival - the connecting word here is, “Cuba” as Cruz’s father came from Cuba so Trump wants voters to see Cruz as coming from Cuba, even though he did not.

He is also insinuating Cruz couldn’t be a Christian since he comes from Cuba - “but not a lot of evangelicals come out of Cuba”. So, it is all a lie (Cruz comes from Cuba so he cannot be a Christian) he wants voters to believe so they will not vote for Cruz.

Cruz has already told those in Iowa that he does not support subsidies for ethanol or any other subsidies. So, Trump tells Iowans he is with them for getting subsidies since Cruz does not. Again, this is tell them anything to get their vote.

1) Cruz’s dad was saved after immigrating.
2) Ted Cruz has never lived in Cuba.

Does Trump not know this? If he does, that is clearly not what he meant.

I support my candidate - I do not “adore” him. So quit with the melodramatic bulls**t. I can find plenty of things to disagree with in both men, if I were so inclined. I just happen to think that Trump is better suited to the job than is Cruz. That’s not hypocritical, its honest.

I was referring to Trump supporters, not just you.

And my point wasn't about Trump's relative suitability for the job and you know that. It was about you complaining about the behavior of Cruz supporters and ignoring behavior that I would consider just as bad or much worse from Trump supporters.

Oh B.S.!

And BTW, Reagan would have NEVER supported the Ethanol subsidies, so how, at least on this issue, is Trump running on Reagan's platform again?

In the grand scheme of things, the distinction is small. But it was to impress evangelicals that his evangelical past is much strongeror more familiar.

I don’t see much advantage, but it’s not a dealbreaker. Some voters will think that Donald is the more traditional evangelical for whatever it’s worth.

It would be similar to drawing a distinction with Hillary over who is the real New Yorker.

But again, in the grand scheme, it’s not newsworthy. I don’t think it’s going to change Cruz supporters to Trump supporters or vice versa.

In a TX mega church Cruz’ father said Ted is an anointed king, whose role is to divide the spoils. A, can anyone explain what Rafael meant, and B, could Trump be making an oblique reference to that characterization?

Of course we Cruz supporters are desperate. Our country is in shambles, we have a great conservative running for president, and Republicans are about to nominate a conman. These are extremely desperate times.

I know I am.

He may have some type of faith in some type of god, but it sure isn't the God of the Bible.

You don't get to honestly call yourself a Christian without asking God to forgive you.

Jesus's first words in his public ministry were "Repent and Believe the Gospel" which pretty much sums up the rest of the New Testament.

As I previously stated - I can find plenty enough to criticize both men. Neither is perfect on several fronts. However, that stated, I think Trump is better suited to the job because of his temperament and experience as an executive.

Senator Cruz is a first-time senator, and an attorney. Not to ridicule him for that, but we do not need another lawyer for this job.

Here is one reason for why I make that assertion: If required, do you believe Ted Cruz would authorize a nuclear strike on an enemy? I do not for one second believe that he has the personality to take that action. However, I have no doubt that, if need be, Trump would utterly annihilate an enemy of this country.

If you don't know this, you don't know Reagan. He was against all forms of welfare. Do yourself a favor and get some books about Reagan and read-up on him.

Well, at least I know all the Cruz guys with character who can’t vote for a flip-flopper won’t be voting for Cruz.

Of course those who were lying their asses off and never really cared about flip flopping will.

As for Trump and ethanol subsidies, I’m not for it. There, there’s your big leftist claim on Trump.

Did Reagan build a wall on the border 60’ tall?

Did he send all illegals back to Mexico or wherever the hell they came from? Of course not, but we still recognize him as the best President in our lifetimes.
