Trump attacks Ted Cruz for not supporting ethanol subsidies
The American Thinker ^ | December 12, 2015 | Ed Straker

Posted on 12/11/2015 11:57:00 PM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Donald Trump attacked Ted Cruz for not supporting ethanol subsidies. He said in Iowa on Friday, "Oil companies give him a lot of money, so he's for oil."

The thing about oil and gas is, it doesn't require big subsidies, because it's the cheapest and most efficient form of fuel for cars. Ethanol, on the other hand, does require big government subsidies, because it is highly uneconomical. Ethanol is much more expensive than oil and gas and, gallon for gallon, produces much less energy than gasoline. That's why the government has to hand over billions in subsidies to big agri-businesses to keep it going. And that's also why the government has to force oil companies to blend ethanol in with their fuels. Because without government coercion, oil companies wouldn't do it, and the price of gasoline would be substantially lower than it is now.

Additionally, ethanol actually acts as a corrosive on car engines. It slowly degrades car parts over time.

But the worst thing about ethanol is that not only does it require taxpayer subsidies, and not only does it raise the price of blended gas, but it also raises the price of many different kinds of foods. Ethanol is made with corn - a lot of it. And when a lot of corn production is diverted to ethanol, there is less corn available to use for food. Corn is heavily used as a sweetener in many food products. By raising the price of corn, the price of many different kinds of foods are raised.

That is what subsidizing ethanol gives us. That is what Donald Trump is for and Ted Cruz is against. Ted Cruz is starting to lead in some Iowa polls, and he's doing it without this kind of pandering...

Oooh is that right?

Tokyo Rove is telling us who he and Hillary fear.

“Karl Rove, who served as an adviser to former President George W. Bush, warned Republicans that nominating Donald Trump could be a death wish for the party. “ LoL.

Maybe a “death wish” for Karl’s cronyism.

.
He’s still ahead, and garnered all the key endorsements.

The ethanol people are Democrats by a wide margin, which is why it is no surprise to see Donnie supporting it.

He’s a big Government and ultra-Globalist guy.

I’ll take you at your word that Trump was not bashing Cruz, but merely pointing out a difference in their issue positions. And I certainly have no problem with candidates pointing out their primary opponents’ positions and past statements and votes.

But what we all should be aware of is that, once again, Donald Trump is trying to win the primary by taking a liberal position on an issue. Ethanol subsidies are the one thing that envirowackos, protectionists and big-government backers all support, and Trump once again “leads from behind” by taking a stance that he knows will be popular with his audience that particular day. Trump acts more like a politician than do the elected officials that he belittles as mere politicians.

Well, at least you're honest about being a big government type.

Wake up! Everyone against ethanol is also going to have to go up against the special interest money and lobby groups that represent ALL the major car manufacturers.

DID YOU KNOW?

"No Surprise: E85 Is a Bummer in Fuel Economy"

Differences in acceleration times were insignificant (although GM says E85 improves horsepower by as much as three percent). On the downside, the fuel economy on E85 was diminished more than 30 percent in two of the three tests, about what we expected.

....

With fewer than 600 stations selling E85 fuel in 37 states, why have GM, Ford, and DaimlerChrysler been cranking out these flex-fuel vehicles by the millions? The answer is the mandatory Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. Federal law requires that the cars an automaker offers for sale average 27.5 mpg; light trucks must achieve 22.2 mpg. Failure to do so can result in substantial fines. However, relief is available to manufacturers that build E85 vehicles to encourage their production.

The irony here is that although E85 in fact gets poorer fuel economy than gasoline, for CAFE purposes, the government counts only the 15-percent gasoline content of E85. Not counting the ethanol, which is the other 85 percent, produces a seven-fold increase in E85 mpg. The official CAFE number for an E85 vehicle results from averaging the gas and the inflated E85 fuel-economy stats.

That is correct. One ha to be both brave and a principled conservative to admit to Iowa voters that you do not support ethanol subsidies.

How many illegals are employed on Iowa corn (and other crop) fields?
Not sarcasm, just an honest question... I don’t know.

IOW, the ‘real’ cost of ethanol and Iowa crops to American taxpayers is the subsidies and the welfare checks.
The ‘jobs lost’ to Iowans are a 2nd issue, and it depends on if those unemployed — are ILLEGALS, OR NOT!!!!

The “GMO” corn is GMOed so it will grow in the desert and resist blight and pestilence.

I’m sure most sweet-corn varieties are also “genetically modified” just like most vegetables, dogs, cats, horses and meat animals. (Hereford, Angus, Yorkshire, Hampshire etc)

Naturally occurring “wild corn” isn’t much of a prize.

I have NO idea.

Most of the corn is harvested via picking machines and combines. I doubt they are being overwhelmingly operated by Illegals.

There are almost no illegals involved in corn or ethanol production. It’s not due to any moral superiority, it’s because both operations are very high tech.

There are plenty of illegals in chicken, pork and beef production and processing. Ethanol plays some role because of the cheap high-protein feed available from the ethanol production process.

Cruz is liable to go backward in his polling numbers with iowa voters if he persists.

Since this is the same position he had when he got those big poll numbers, how do you figure? He has been open about his position on this issue for a long time.

Because independent variables cause CONSTANT shifts in candidates numbers

That's what's astounding the press. Trump's numbers, no matter what he says, sway relatively little.

That is highly unusual in a world governed by independent variables.

Who won Iowa in 2012? Rick Santorum.

Rick Santorum finished the Iowa Republican caucuses 34 votes ahead of Mitt Romney.

Where did it take him once the "independent variables" kicked in?

It will be entertaining to see how Cruz answers it. Cruz has been consistently conservative, gracious and factual.
