Donald Trump took aim at Sen. Ted Cruz Sunday, launching one of the first of what will likely be a series of attacks against the candidate now leading him in Iowa.
"I don't think he's qualified to be president," Trump said, arguing the Texas Republican's tenure in the Senate makes him too divisive for the job.
Cruz has been "frankly a little bit of a maniac," Trump said in a taped interview on Fox News. "You're never gonna be able to get things done that way."
"You can't walk into the Senate and scream and call people liars and not be able to cajole and get along with people," Trump said. "He'll never be able to get anything done and that's the problem with Ted."
Trump also appeared Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union," touting his business success, his best-selling books and his TV show "The Apprentice."
"You don't make that kind of success without judgement," he added.
Trump was responding to comments from Cruz earlier this week questioning the real estate mogul's judgement. A Bloomberg News/Des Moines Register poll released Saturday showed Cruz opening a 10 point polling lead on Trump in Iowa.
"I would say I have far better judgement than Ted," Trump said. "I'm more capable."
Trump also stood by his controversial proposal to ban Muslims from entering the country on a temporary basis despite condemnation from the leaders of both parties.
"I'm about security. I'm about safety. I'm about borders," he said. "We have to have the right people coming into our country."
Trump defended his Muslim policy by arguing his Muslim friends supported the idea.
"They know they have a problem," he said.
The GOP front-runner blasted President Obama and Hillary Clinton for their reluctance to criticize radical Islam in the wake of the San Bernardino shooting.
"If you don't identify the problem, you're never going to solve the problem," he said.
Donald may be projecting, as the psychologists say.
Yeah, for Iowa, this is a big blunder by Trump. Cruz should take that to the bank in the debate Tuesday.
The Donald may have jumped the hammerhead with this one...
Cruz Tries to Claim the Middle Ground on Immigration
What Mr. Cruz has tried to articulate in both word and deed is a middle ground. It got no support from Democrats in Washington, but it goes further than many on the far right want to go by offering leniency to undocumented immigrants here already: A path to legal status, but not to citizenship. A green card with no right to naturalization.
snip
Besides barring citizenship while instituting some level of legalization for those here already, Mr. Cruz has proposed increasing the number of green cards awarded annually, to 1.35 million from 675,000. He also wants to eliminate the per-country limit that he said left applicants from countries like Mexico, China and India hamstrung when they tried to gain legal entry to this country.
You can take Trump out of the Democrat Party, but you can’t take the Democrat out of Trump.
Sounds like a compliment from Trump.
This latest Trump volley is exactly what the MSM wants...a food fight between started between Trump and Cruz...to diminish both of them and help the Hildabeast. I hope Cruz does not take the bate on this latest Trump rant.
“This is going to backfire.”
How many times have we heard that since Trump announced in June? LOL!
"BLACK !"
Fox News Sunday
WALLACE: Ted Cruz.
LIMBAUGH: Brilliant, and conservative through and through. Trustworthy, strong, confident, leader, and somebody in whom you can totally depend.
Donald may get a hand full of blacks to vote for him but, they are not republicans so here in the primaries this was not a good move.
Still he had to answer the question, and for his purposes he gave a good answer.
Me I ain’t a politician and I already posted what I feel about affirmative action above.
I am for merit.
GOPe is probably having an orgasm seeing this. Trump and Cruz going at each resulting in both being severely damaged is their ideal scenario, just what they want.
I agree with you, but my only issue with Cruz is what I see during his campaign stops. In many cases nowhere as many show up for him as Trump.
Cruz is great, but the lack of overall appeal makes me worry about the general election.
Notice how he didn't say that Democrats should reach across the aisle and get along with Republicans.
This is a foolish statement. Trump is starting to lose me. The guy does not have a filter. At first, I enjoyed his PC-free and unscripted delivery. Now it appears that he does not give any forethought before he speaks. He is also fairly inarticulate for such a smart businessman. Not looking very Presidential right now.
Don’t go there, Donald! You are exposing yourself.
++++
In The Year of the Outsider this is not a good move by The Donald. Calling out McConnell was carefully orchestrated. And it worked. It is one of the main methods utilized by Cruz, a sitting U.S. Senator, to achieve his very valuable Outsider Status. This is not a good year to be defending the Senate Leadership. The last time I checked Congress was sitting somewhere in the 6% approval range.
I applied the Wifey Test to this latest move by Trump. It was thumbs down. And she is a big Trump Fan.
Next question, please.
“Don’t go there, Donald! You are exposing yourself.”
I am sure Cruz is called much worse by fellow senators.
Were you as solicitous for Trump when Cruz jumped him.
Looks like that possibility of a Cruz-Trump ticket is beginning to fade away.
“Trump is doing just what the GOPe and Hillary had hoped he would do.”
Is what Trump said about Hillary on Fox News this morning what Hillary had hoped he would say?
