Students practice calligraphy by writing "There is no god but Allah"

A Virginia school district is defending a classroom assignment that required students to practice calligraphy by writing the Muslim statement of faith, "There is no god but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah."

Female students at Riverheads High School in Staunton, Virginia, were also invited to wear Muslim clothing -- a story first reported by The Schilling Show.

"Neither these lessons, nor any other lesson in the world geography course, are an attempt at indoctrination to Islam or any other religion, or a request for students to renounce their own faith or profess any belief," the district said in a statement provided to Fox News.

The Muslim-friendly calligraphy assignment took place in a world geography class. The teacher had the kids copy the Muslim statement of faith, also known as the shahada.

Parents told The Schilling Show that their children were not given the translation of what they were writing.

In other words, there were more than likely a few Christian teenagers in that room who had no idea they were writing, "There is no god but Allah."

But the school district doesn't seem to think that's a problem.

"The statement presented as an example of the calligraphy was not translated for students, nor were students asked to translate it, recite it or otherwise adopt or pronounce it as a personal belief," the district stated.

They said it was all about the art--not about the theology.

"They were simply asked to attempt to artistically render written Arabic in order to understand its artistic complexity," they stated.

And out of sheer coincidence -- out of all the Arabic words and phrases the teacher could have selected, she picked the Islamic statement of faith?

Home schooling is not the answer. That is surrender. We contr the majority of statehouses, and the states control the public schools. We can stop this ourselves, at least in the red states.

Images at the Schilling Show and local news web site show a calligraphy assignment page telling students that this is the Islamic statement of faith, and for them to try copying it (the Schiller site seems to have photoshopped the word "caution" onto the assignment):

Looking at the apparent image of the assignment, it seems like it might come from a calligraphy instruction book. If so, was this book designed for students, or whom? And have other students been given this very assignment at other schools, I wonder?

If I had kids it would be cold day in Hell before they wrote the shahada in or out of class.

I would also sue the school for religious subversion.

If they wanted to kids to practice caligraphy, they should stick with the classics, things like "Stick to the Devil you know", "The Wages of Sin is Death", "If you don't work, you die" and "All that glitters is not gold"?

I agree that the kids probably didn’t know what they were writing. But, informed parents should warn their children about things like this, and the parents should even be willing to see their children fail the assignment, rather than write something so blasphemous.

As Rush indicated today, we are being purposely trained to not use common sense. I guess for some though, no training is required.

The first I remember of islam being promoted in society was in the movie Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. I think that came out in 1991, and I would have been 12 years old at the time. Morgan Freeman played a savage(muslim), and in the movie he was portrayed as peaceful, which is a complete crock when you know what muslims are really like.

Then I am sure the school would have no problem having the next lesson be writing

Allah is Satan and Mohammad is his messenger.

As long as it's in calligraphy and the kids dont know what they are writing!

Actually, it seems like the assignment was a printout and it told the students that it was the Islamic statement of faith. They just weren’t given the translation, in that case.

They are being destroyed, just like once conservative California.

Texas is next on the list.

So this was supposed to be a purely “artistic” assignment, but it’s not art class. It’s geography class. And apparently the image posted on a couple sites shows the assignment, and it comes from a textbook, apparently then a geography text book. So this might be an assignment that many students in other schools are doing too. It would not be the creation of the teacher then, but created by an actual textbook company.

The citizens there need to clean house immediately....they wouldn’t even want to see me come in the door....this asininity has reached epidemic proportions and should be ended forthwith.

I wonder how hard it would be to substitute the word “goat” for “god”?

In their own “scriptures”, Allah is referred to as “the great deceiver”.

In the Bible, the only thing God cannot do is tell a lie. Satan is described by Jesus as “a liar and the father of lies”. Sounds like Allah to me.

At the same time as many school districts abandon cursive writing (in English), all of a sudden students are being taught to write cursive in Arabic, and their sample text just happens to be the Islamic statement of faith! You can’t make this stuff up - if you did, people would laugh and call you paranoid.
