C’mon conservatives, stop smearing Ted Cruz on his immigration stance!
The Right Scoop ^ | Dec 16, 2015

Today Guy Benson wrote that Ted Cruz lied about his positions last night on the legalization of illegals. Here’s what he wrote:

Cruz now indignantly claims that the black-and-white evidence in these two clips is “not accurate.” Some of the Texas Senator’s defenders say that his pro-legalization amendment was merely a strategic move designed to prove a point (that Democrats were insistent upon citizenship, not legalization, because they were hunting for votes), or to help torpedo the broader legislation. But that’s not what Ted Cruz said at the time. He told journalist Byron York that his amendment was a good faith effort to fix the bill “so that it actually solves the problem.” He echoed this sentiment at a Princeton University alumni event: "The amendment I introduced affected only citizenship; it did not affect the underlying legalization in the Gang of Eight bill," he said. “My effort in introducing [my amendmentss] was to find solution that reflected common ground and fixed the problem." Senator Ted Cruz did, clearly and provably, favor mass legalization of legal immigrants. He proposed it, he advocated for it, and he asked his colleagues to pass it.

It indeed was as strategic move designed to expose what the Gang of 8 bill was all about. We show that here via Amanda Carpenter. Carpenter actually worked for Cruz and knew what he was doing. She’s no hack.

But Benson ignores all of that and says that Cruz actually told reporters and others at the time that basically he was really trying to fix the bill. This is the basis of his argument.

Well, what’s Cruz supposed to say? Is he supposed to expose the lies of the Gang of 8 by arguing one thing in the Senate and telling everyone else something different? Then his fellow Senators would surely know his strategy and start spreading it everywhere in order to refute Cruz.

It’s not hard to put this together. Guy Benson can do better.

Ouch. I understand the world of the Senate with amendments and voting for a good amendment to kill bad legislation is pretty arcane, but that didn’t sound very good. It sounds to me that Cruz was for amnesty light before he was against it. I think that’s part of what people are upset with. It’s a politician answer...not saying it’s not legitimate, but it still doesn’t sound very good.

I saw the interview also. Cruz babbled non answers to Baier’s questions.

I'm sure Cruz is a Parliamentarian. He introduced a poison pill into the bill in the form of an amendment in order to kill the bill. He was working with Jeff Sessions who is no amnesty guy. No one wants to see how sausage is made, so Cruz wasn't all that candid back at the time about what he was doing. Now it's come back to bite him. I'm not going to fault him for getting the job done or not fessing up at the time that he threw a wrench in the works. Remember he was under a lot of heat for "shutting down the government" etc.

LOL. Well I was lying then but I’m not lying now. Boy does he have a hard time with that. I wish people could see that. And to top it off, waxing poetic on his immigration plans, he still never said DEPORT.

This would be another “It’s Bush’s fault” in the form of “It’s Obama’s fault”.

I don’t care what you think I sound like. But don’t take it personally, I don’t care what supporters of any liberal think about me.

Guy Benson can do better.

One would think so, but sadly Mr. Benson has an agenda.

Cruz told Byron York in an interview that it wasn’t a poison pill and that he wanted the bill to pass.

Again, watch these video's:

I, and many people, are grateful that Ted Cruz led this fight. Otherwise, they would have approved amnesty already.

Yours in an exemplar of a point of view that I do not understand, or if I do, indicates to me a person who has little experience.

Ted Cruz and Jeff Sessions set out to kill the “Gang of Eight” amnesty bill, and they succeeded. Why on Earth does it trouble you that the process of killing the bill was messy?

You seem not really to object to the tactics used in proposing poison pill amendments, you seem only to object to Cruz not preemptively disclosing the strategy to the pro-amnesty forces.

Which side are you on, anyway?

Cruz told Byron York in an interview that it wasn’t a poison pill and that he wanted the bill to pass.

Of course he did. What should he have said, "No, we are merely proposing these amendments in a cynical and non-serious maneuver to try to scuttle the bill."

That seems to me to be a very silly position to take.
