I was looking more for something that disputed the claim that the South did not go to war to defend their system of slavery. I’m sure Hinson’s tale is interesting and he was upset over the death of his sons. But war is hell. I read that somewhere.

The Hinson book does include some history, and the author also disputes that 'the south' went to war for the sole cause of slavery.

The slavery spin is northern propaganda near the end of the war. IMHO, the 'south' went to war secondary to northern aggression and radicalized abolitionists.

BTW, I'm not from the south, or east or west.
