Bowe Bergdahl, an ethical dilemma for America
CNN ^ | December 15, 2015 | Frida Ghitis

Posted on 12/17/2015 3:19:48 PM PST by Clintonfatigued

In the "Serial" podcast, Bergdahl speaks to Boal, the producer and writer of the war films "The Hurt Locker" and "Zero Dark Thirty," and explains that when he left his post he had planned to get word to superiors off-base to raise the alert about leadership failures in his unit. In his "Serial" telling, he said he wanted to trigger a search, a so-called DUSTWUN search ("duty status whereabouts unknown") that would bring his unit to the attention of higher-ups.

Revealing the stunning immaturity that motivated his disastrous scheme, he said he had thoughts of emulating a fictional spy-hero from action movies. He said he imagined he could be like, "I don't know, Jason Bourne..." He said, "I had this fantastic idea that I was going to prove to the world that I was the real thing."

But the plan quickly fell apart. Just minutes after walking away unarmed he says he realized he had made a big mistake. He got lost in the mountains and was captured by men armed with AK-47s and taken prisoner for five excruciating years. The military says he was tortured, and he described extreme emotional suffering during his captivity.

Bergdahl's motivation was more than the stuff of adolescent dreams of heroism. In a gripping profile by the late Rolling Stone writer Michael Hastings, we learned of his final email from Afghanistan to his parents, where he wrote "The future is too good to waste on lies," and complained of the "self-righteous arrogance" of his army superiors. "It is all revolting," he told them. His father, Bob Bergdahl, responded in caps, "OBEY YOUR CONSCIENCE."

Perfect, but we should sever the head and bag it and deliver it to OSHITHEAD.

Some quotes from Bowe’s e-mail to pops:

“My battalion commander was] a conceited old fool.”

“I am ashamed to be an american.”

“the title of US soldier is just the lie of fools”

“The horror that is america is disgusting”

This guy is a freaking Private, and he cares about his BN Commander? Most privates hardly know their BN Co’s name, much less have an opinion of him. His self importance is sickening.

BTW, did you know he was kicked out of the Coast Guard after just 26 days, for psychological reasons?

Or that a fellow soldier attributes this quote to him: “If this deployment is lame, I’m just going to walk off into the mountains of Pakistan.”

He’s a piece of crap.

What "dilemma"? I mean seriously, in whose mind is this not a case of desertion before the enemy? In a combat zone, with his own people getting killed around him and eventually for him?

Now, you want a source of true incomprehension, you might try figuring out why in the world 0bama thought it was worth a huge sum of money and the release of five hard-core terrorists to get this guy back. I'd be happy if anyone could explain that one cogently.

Gee I wonder who they work for? Too bad we didn't arm our guys with some gun free zone signs.

Hang him with a new rope and no need to stretch the rope first either.

I’ve got a recollection of a tale that he mailed most of his uniforms home just before he deserted, which shows he had no expectation of needing them again.

Anyone else remember that one?

If he didn’t go into the military, he might be dying his hair red & stalking a movie theater

The only ethical dilemma is whether Obama should just be impeached for freeing enemy terrorists in direct violation of federal law, or whether he should also be sentenced to a jail term.

My only dilemma is should he hang or be shot by a firing squad.

All BS. If he really wanted to cause the supposed “problems” he claims... he would have taken all his gear as such... guns and nods and even comm gear with codes would have triggered a massive spot light on the unit and he would have been able to protect himself until higher ups swarmed that place.

Nothing but obama style post hoc excuses.

He is already working with people on a movie deal.

An execution would make for a poignant ending.

No ethical dilemma here. His desertion from his unit directly caused the deaths of the members of his unit looking for him.

That’s a death penalty offense which should have been carried out a week after he was brought home.

I missed the big puzzle too.

No dilemma at all. A bullet in the head...over...done.

Check out # 42 for Bergdahl's emails to his dad.

. . . . if there was ever any doubt.

Six men died searching for him. IMO, their families should be ones judging this idiotic dirtbag. How would you like your husband, father, son, uncle to have died because of Bergdahl???
