The Big Lie: 5.6% Unemployment
Gallup ^ | 2/3/2015 | Jim Clifton

Posted on 01/01/2016 3:22:23 PM PST by GilGil

Right now, we're hearing much celebrating from the media, the White House and Wall Street about how unemployment is "down" to 5.6%. The cheerleading for this number is deafening. The media loves a comeback story, the White House wants to score political points and Wall Street would like you to stay in the market.

None of them will tell you this: If you, a family member or anyone is unemployed and has subsequently given up on finding a job -- if you are so hopelessly out of work that you've stopped looking over the past four weeks -- the Department of Labor doesn't count you as unemployed. That's right. While you are as unemployed as one can possibly be, and tragically may never find work again, you are not counted in the figure we see relentlessly in the news -- currently 5.6%. Right now, as many as 30 million Americans are either out of work or severely underemployed. Trust me, the vast majority of them aren't throwing parties to toast "falling" unemployment.

While this article is dated from February 2015, the point here is to see how the Labor Department views unemployed people who have stopped looking for work after 4 weeks. According to the Labor Department you are not counted as "unemployed" which means you are put in the "employed" category which is how we are getting such a low unemployment rate.

They are put in the ‘not in the labor force’ category.

It is very hard to say who should or should not be in the labor force. It is clear that a full-time student, or someone who is busy raising kids and keeping house, is not.

This leaves a lot of people who are not working for various reasons. They obviously have some way to live without working, but under certain circumstances they might consider getting a job.

It is more simple than the scenario you provided. Anyone not collecting unemployment is considered employed. An 18 to 25 year old that doesn’t work the required amount of time is not eligible for unemployment. It varies State to State. Florida for instance requires 5 full quarters of income. NJ requires 22 weeks of a minimum amount of money. Employers, just like OBAMACare, are laying off before the deadline to collect. Seasonal areas are worse as you can’t make the minimum.

Yes! but according to Gallup they are not considered “unemployed.” How can you not be in the labor force and at the same time not be unemployed; yet, the Department of labor does not consider people who have not found jobs unemployed.

The left of America, much as the communists worldwide, depend on lying to further their cause. If the unemployed Americans who want work were counted, the figure would be closer to 48% of citizens, not counting the some 50 million illegal immigrants now living off the obamanation regimes welfare programs and who will vote it they can, for the evil democrats and rinos of America who support their illegal and costly lives.

Actual number closer to 20 percent. The only reason there is not rioting is because of the huge (Unsustainable) welfare benefits being handed out. If they were to stop the lid would certainly blow off.

( How can you not be in the labor force and at the same time not be unemployed;)

This is how to make the lie of 5.6 unemployed seem real to the minds of those who see not and who hear not.

Soon as Trump or Cruz is sworn in the unemployment rate will skyrocket to 20+ percent.

The purpose of the unemployment numbers is to figure out how hard or easy it is to find a job.

In order to do this, they take divide the number of people working by the the number of people in the labor force.

It is technically true to say that an 16-year-old boy in high school, or a woman at home taking care of three little kids, is ‘unemployed’ - that’s right, they don’t have any paying work. But it is not reasonable to expect them to seek full-time employment, so they are not counted in the unemployment statistics.

Before LBJ, a man was considered worthless if he didn’t have some kind of job. It was expected and desired.

After Trump/Cruz wins in November, watch how fast the media discovers, not only the homeless, but the unemployed and underemployed.

That is the figure I recall from business types I trust. 19-20% was what they stated this summer. Did you see where the Somali Muslims are PO’s at Cargill’s FT Morgan meat plant. They want CAIR to negotiate. Hell they make 14 an hour but demand their religious breaks.

They’re definitely full of sheet. The stats they have to post, they fabricate. the stats that conflict with their BS, they hide. Try to find current welfare spending total expenditure statistics. Good luck.

Government employment/unemployment statistics are developed using a model similar to the one used by Climate Change (pseudo)scientists (Jones, Hansen, Mann, etc.) where you put in the desired result and the model generates data to back it up....

You to look at the unemployment number in the proper context, that's 5.6% unemployment for illegal aliens not legal Americans!

As usual they never go to Social Security or the IRS and find out how many are paying taxes from being employed.

No scribblers and babblers on the right will ask that since the thoughts have not been put in their heads by Big News.
