Marine arrested in New Year's slaying of Texas college student

A U.S. Marine was arrested Tuesday at his base in an Arizona city near the Mexican border, some 1,100 miles from where he allegedly shot and killed a 20-year-old college student who'd just rung in the new year.

Eric Jamal Johnson was taken into custody in Yuma "for killing Sara Mutschlechner," Denton, Texas, police spokesman Shane Kizer told CNN.

The U.S. Marine Corps said in a news release that Johnson was arrested in connection with the Denton shooting around 6:30 a.m. (8:30 a.m. ET) Tuesday at the Marine air station in Yuma where he's based.

Johnson, a corporal, belongs to Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One.

Mutschlechner was driving through the Dallas suburb with three passengers around 2 a.m. (3 a.m. ET) Friday when a gray Honda Pilot with five to six males inside pulled up next to them, Kizer said at a Tuesday afternoon press conference.

"It was an amicable conversation to begin with, but quickly went downhill and some derogatory statements were made toward the female occupants of that vehicle," the Denton Police spokesman told reporters.

Kizer described those "very derogatory" remarks as being of a "sexual nature," adding that a male inside Mutschlechner's vehicle responded by calling them out as offensive.

I suspect that will happen in this case and I hope it does.

Didn’t need a picture when I saw the middle name.

I also knew the press reports were probably lying when I saw the middle name.

I don’t think this is going to qualify as a death penalty case, particularly after the perp plays the race card.

"Authorities managed to track down Johnson after talking to survivors in Mutschlechner's vehicle, culling through social media and talking to people at the New Year's Eve party that she and three others in her vehicle had just left."

I memory serves me right during the Insurgency in Iraq years ago, I was told by guys that work in recruiting that they cut corners to make their quota each month, even if that meant enlisting potential gang bangers for they badly needed servicemen, not really blaming Bush just saying how it was.

“I guess he likes white meat.”

Half white. The girl was hispanic - or at least half hispanic. You can tell by looking at her photo and the photos of her parents. No less tragic a death, I’m just posting info.

ending his life with his veins pumped full of nasty chemicals.

Actually, the chemicals used are not really nasty at moderate dosages. They use sedatives and pain killers.

I have a feeling that Cpl. Johnson is about to commence his process of self-discovery...where he discovers that he's being stood up in front of a jury in North Texas, then he discovers that he screwed up real bad.

I worked with Jarheads and this dude would have be taken care nice and slow in a painful way, as one Marine said to me a long time ago, “we take care of our own”.

You can be sure the media won’t make this guy’s name a household word. Trayvon, Michael Brown, Freddie Gray... and Eric who?

They also use potassium chloride. Taken intravenously, it’s nasty.

IMO, though, that whole approach is too complicated and too expensive. Just stuff the bastard in a sealed container and purge it with 100% dry nitrogen. Dirt cheap, not hazardous when diluted with 18% oxygen, and completely lethal.

I agree, and was thinking the same. Why not just use CO? Nitrogen would suffice nicely as well.

“Yes. He is a corporal, even.”

When I finished basic in the Army in early 1969, some real goof-off black guys got the promotions to E2.

The drill instructor said that was the new policy, affirmative action promotions.

I doubt that has changed.

I whole heartedly agree. This young lady was gunned down while being the designated driver for her friends on New Years’ Eve, so they could all get home safely. They got home, she did not. All because they brushed off a car full of ferals.

In Texas, to file capital murder charges for a non LEO or first-responder, the accused will have had to have committed another felony in the commission of the murder. Prosecutors will have to review all pertinent facts before filing charges. I am not sure if this rises to the level of a capital offense.

Pretty much any inert gas will do. I believe nitrogen is the least expensive, as it composes 78% of our atmosphere and is relatively easily separated from the other gases.

Raise the bar for conviction but if convicted - burn him alive. Strike that. Roast him alive on a spit. Slowly. In the neighborhood were he grew up.

Done consistently it will have a surprising negative effect on the murder rate. People will consider their actions more carefully.

Since going to prison confers status in many social groups these days we need to up the deterrent.
