Plenty of Texas gun rights advocates celebrated 2016 as the year open carry finally arrived. But for some conservative Catholics, itâs another reason clash with Dallas Bishop Kevin Farrell.
The Dallas Diocese forbids parishioners from bringing guns â openly carried or concealed â to their churches. A recent online column by Farrell â described by some as âstridentâ â has made the Bishopâs critics even more vocal.

Well, look at what their Rainbow-hued Multicultural Pope is saying these days.
The Catholic Church is in trouble with the Man Upstairs.
A pope of grope.
Although there is something to be said biblically in favor of groping. If you weren’t looking for ANYTHING spiritual past where you are, then groping is an improvement, you might meet the Lord somewhere you weren’t quite expecting Him to be.
We’re ALL in trouble with the Man Upstairs. Enough trouble that He had to go to the Cross for it.
Anyhow, if one of these churches gets attacked and nobody’s even there to guard it, they may have a second thought. Nobody is hoping for an attack, but God can let something like this happen as a warning anyhow.
The Dallas Bishop’s article:
“A Response to Open Carry”
Thank God that someone finally has the courage to close the loopholes in our pitiful gun control laws to reduce the number of mass shootings, suicides and killings that have become a plague in our country.
President Barack Obamaâs executive actions, though modest, are first steps in correcting gun laws so weak that they are ludicrous. Congress has unabashedly sold itself to the gun lobby. If there was ever any doubt, its recent action to kill legislation to ban people on the terrorist no-fly list made it obvious.
It is absurd that terrorists, criminals, and mentally unbalanced people can freely and openly buy weapons not intended for sport, but designed to kill people. Writers of the Second Amendment envisioned smooth bore muskets and not semi-automatic and automatic weapons of war.
The presidentâs action is a small but important step to control sales of weapons at gun shows and over the internet that sidestep background checks. These âback doorâ gun dealers have effectively nullified the law requiring background checks by legitimate gun dealers by creating a black-market in firearms for those seeking to avoid background checks for whatever reason. The proliferation of weapons must be controlled.
Sadly, Texas has become the 45th state to embrace the cowboy mentality that permits the open carrying of guns. It is difficult to see how this knew law allowing persons with concealed handgun licenses (CHL) to openly carry firearms can accomplish anything other than cause people to feel threatened and intimidated.
Under the new law churches may prohibit CHL holders from carrying open or concealed weapons on church premises with appropriate signage. In accordance with the law, the Diocese of Dallas will prohibit the possession of any weapon in any facility owned, leased and operated by the diocese or a diocesan entity, except as specifically permitted by diocesan policy.
This policy is rooted in the belief that our churches, schools and other places of worship are intended to be sanctuaries â holy sites where people come to pray and participate in the ministry of the Church.
Let us pray that our legislators will see this as a human and not a political concern so that gun violence can be mitigated through appropriate legislation that allows us to live in a safe environment while respecting our Second Amendment rights.

Anyhow, it would be curious to ask them their take on the biblical instructions by Jesus to take a sword. In lieu of congregational arming, they need to have some other arms, or else they’ve even dissed Jesus. Maybe they’ll find their sacramental wine going sour, or something like that (they tend to get signs that are different from those of other communions). Or Mary will weep over it. Or something.
WHAT A WRONG MINDED MAROON
Ooh! And no, just because I am a wascally evangelical this doesn’t make it not my problem. The devil never came in a Catholic only flavor. Attract him to Dallas and he will pollute all the congregations.
Mrs. Don-O. What does one do in a Catholic context about such ignorami. It’s a pan-church issue, and where I am (Baptist in Nebraska, I have not updated my FR state) they’ve designated a security committee in compliance with state law (and now our worship leader packs a guitar and a pistol).
If a person conceals carry into a Catholic Church who would know?
Frankly, your a sitting duck in a Catholic Church. There is likely no security unless you count a handful of seasoned citizens as ushers as security.
The bishop of the Dallas Diocese through this public declaration is asking for a slaughter in one of his parishes.
I'm sure he's being a serious SJW (USCCB wing), but that is stupid enough to be funny.
Mr. niteowl77
See how long this ban holds up. The BIG PROBLEM for this clown is that he WILL NOT get the Open Carry people back, nor the much larger group of people (that he will quickly find) that support Open Carry, even though they don’t do it.
Got something similar from the bishop of the Diocese of Kalamazoo, MI.
Well, the hierarchy has spoken.
Unreal. The Catholic Church I grew up in was equivalent to Basic Training. First the nuns would prime you up, and then the Golden Gloves trained Irish Christian Brothers would work you over.
I have many friends that I know are carrying concealed even at Mass in many of the churches in the Dallas Diocese.
Well I’m Catholic and I carry concealed everywhere....everywhere. This Bishop needs to keep his misguided political views to himself. To openly side with Obama, arguably one of the most amoral anti-Christian politicians ever elected is unconscionable. In addition he is passing judgment on an entire class of people he doesn’t even know. He needs to spend some serious time in the confessional for that one. I think he’s lost touch with his mission. Unfortunately he may have let the power of his position cause him to ignore the beam in his eye while he searches for the splinter in his brother’s eye.
If I were catholic, this bishop is immediately my mortal enemy. Imagine what he is since I am NOT catholic...
“described Farrell as a leftist with an Irish-European view of guns that doesnât have a place in Texas. this bishop was born in Dublin and came to Dallas from Washington D.C.”
Pretty much sums it up right there. Time the Cardinal to move his ass back to a gun free sanctuary inner-city parish.
Not smart AT ALL to attend an advertised gun-free church.
Not Catholic but attended mass on Christmas Eve. Some I know were packing. Makes for a peaceful service.
I know carrying weapons, even by chl holders, has been forbidden in the Archdiocese of San Antonio for many years.
