To suggest such a thing, a "war on cancer," simplifies the disease and suggests to anyone with any familiarity with cancer that he doesn't have a clue as to how this would be done. Cancer is not a singular disease: there are many types, in many different bodily systems, and their oncogenesis comes about in so many different ways. By definition, cancers work similarly. Physiologically speaking, cancers are very, very different.

His suggestion will reap future political benefits, however. When some mean, old Republican suggests any sort of limit on the funding for NIH or ACA, their Democratic opponent can shout, "See! Republicans WANT people to die of cancer!"

Looks like some people regret that John Kerry was never elected President before Chris Reeves died

I heard once that declaring war on cancer in 1971 was like planning to go to the moon in the 20's or 30's.

But the situation is not like that any more because there has been a huge increase in the understanding of cancer and related biology that comes from decades of basic research.

With genius scientists like Obama and Biden on the case I finally feel comfortable taking up chain smoking.

Raise taxes, cure cancer.

This reminds me of my (California) Governor Brown’s own Don Quixote moment, with his Smart Trains to nowhere, already billions overbudget, years behind schedule.

Well, Obama will be right in one respect. When he finally leaves office we will be rid of the “Cancer That Is Obama.”

We did this before.

Nixon’s War in Cancer.

A lot of money. Learned a lot about biology. Good stuff, but red herrings as far as curing cancer.

The incremental improvements in chemotherapies and treatment regimens, on the other hand, have done a lot to make people survive or live longer.

It’s more profitable to treat, than to cure, hence why a cure has “never been found” yet.

How true. We have been taught to fear “Big Oil” as the enemy.
Actually, “Big Cancer” is the greater enemy because it is too profitable to attempt to cure than find a way to prevent the disease.

A complex disease, with so many types, it may be impossible to throw enough money at it to cure it.
Comparing it to the lunar landings is silly. We were able to accomplish that with theory, computers, hardware, bravery and money. Cancer cure is a nice goal, sounds great (we started long ago) but, no, we can only treat the disease not prevent it. Lifestyle changes are the obvious method to avoid the possibility of cancer but not prevent it.

“U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday pledged to undertake a historic push to develop a cure for cancer, tapping Vice President Joe Biden to lead the effort.”

I think he misspoke. With Biden at the helm, he must have meant a cure for Somnambulism (Sleep Disorder).

At this point everyone is just holding their noses until 2016 when they will finally get to say once and for all- good riddance! Since the right won’t impeach him for the MANY offenses her has committed against this country- all we can do is ride out the freakin storm

No wonder so many people are PISSED at the GOP Rinos!

Abort babies before they’re born. Then it will be impossible for them to get cancer. Or be poor, or thrown in jail. Abortion solves so many of society’s problems!

All The Won needs to do is sign an EO and it’s cured. So it is written so shall it be done.

Want to save 100 million lives? Eradicate communism instead. That money would be more effectively spent.

Does this mean he’ll have less time and money to spend on stopping the oceans from rising?
