Air Force Caves, Agrees To Delay A-10 Retirement Indefinitely

The Air Force is indefinitely doing away with its plan to retire the A-10 jet, a move that seems both inevitable and shocking, given the aggressive steps leadership has taken to get rid of the aircraft and the fierce push back they received in response.

The remarkably high demand for A-10s from commanders is almost universally cited among critics of the A-10 decommissioning process. More details will be available when the Pentagon’s 2017 budget plan to keep the bird is sent over to Congress for consideration.

Best ground attack aircraft ever built and a truly superb descendant of the P-47. Start the production line again.

Transfer them and the operating budgets over to the Army and Marines where they will be appreciated.

We should be building brand new ones by the dozens...this 100 year war on Aboriginal Pygmies is going to need lots of flying tanks.

DAMN YOU PYGMIES!!!!

You didn't think I would say mooslime hordes out loud did you?
I want the Nikki lickers to think that I have “grown’ and “evolved”.

Upgrade the engines and armor and build a couple hundred more. They are flying tanks. A dozen or two in a squadron flying in wolf packs would be like an airborne panzer division. The sound of that 30 mm Gatling gun coming at you must be a terror for anyone unlucky enough to be in its path, like these Iraqi's caught on the road with their Kuwait hoard.

I would love to see the production lines for the A-10 restarted to bring the numbers up to snuff.

One the best aircraft ever produced.

I think the A-10 has already been re-winged or skinned, and while those 291 have a lot of life left in them, I agree with the poster who said we should be producing more of them, AND giving them to the Army and Marines, and making a carrier compatible versions.

Stealth has it’s role.
-So does the B-52, and that isn’t being retired any time soon even though it has NO stealth.
-So does the A-10, a heavily armored flying arsenal that is as bad ass as anything anyone has ever produced, including the Russians.

Giving up the A-10 would have been a tragic mistake.

The B-1B arrived to perform close air support at 12,000 feet and a 5-mile orbit. It then dropped the two bombs on the Americans positioned on a ridge line.

The USAF would rather do CAS with a strategic nuclear bomber than a A10. Crazy but true.

At last.

A rational decision.

Now. Re-engine the B52 fleet..... Nope. Costs too much. Not enough benefit. Jet fuel is only 2.00 a gallon now.

Oh wait! Ya mean it costs more to fuel a B-52 FROM another series of tankers flying at 30,000 feet than it does from a Texaco station on the ground with a truck? Gosh. Who dah think!

I though Obama made them switch to bio-fuel (at about $60.00 / gal).

Time to dig out the blueprints for the tooling so a production line can be set up. Or did our government order all of that destroyed too?

The US Army is forbidden by law to employ fixed wing weapons systems. This is why they use Apache helicopters for close ground air support.

I flew helicopters in Germany & it was cool whenever we heard over the 123.45 freq, “PIGS IN SPAAAAACE!!!”

Then a pair of A-10’s appeared and THEY were masking & unmasking behind trees like they were Cobras!

What a machine.
