My guess is that our guys were on an extraction mission and chose to get caught in order that our SpecOps could get away later.

The Harry S Truman is in the Persian Gulf
AWACs would have known where everything was.
If there was a concern of approaching craft, F-18's could have been on station in 10 minutes.
Even without GPS, there is radar.
Other than those two, A course would have been laid by compass, before embarking.
Kuwait to Bahrain is a straight shot. Following a compass bearing MIGHT have brought them 20 miles from Iranian waters. From looking at generic maps on the web, it looks more like 35-40.
This whole thing stinks.
