Did Trump walk into a trap on “NY Values” fight?
Legal Insurrection ^ | 1/15/16 | William A. Jacobson

The exchange between Ted Cruz and Donald Trump on “NY values” was one of the highlights of last night’s debate.

While Cruz clearly was referring to liberalism, he used a phrase that left him open to Trump’s counterattack invoking 9/11:

he media is thrilled with Trump’s response. Of course, much of that media is in or from NY City. I expressed last night that I wasn’t sure that the issue would play in Trump’s favor outside NY.

I was born in NYC, spent my early childhood there, grew up in and returned to the NYC suburbs after law school until moving to Rhode Island in 1993. And since 2008 have lived (originally part time now full time) in Ithaca.

I understand what Cruz was referring to. And it has nothing to do with knocking the heroism of NY police and firemen, or how New Yorkers reacted under attack. It has everything to do with political, economic and social outlooks which are not accepted in the Republican Party in general much less among conservatives.

The Cruz campaign apparently thinks this is a fight it needs to have, via Washington Examiner:

You're not from Pelham, NY are you?

Cruz was putting down New York City to build his following in Iowa.

He was trashing NYC to smear Trump.

I was first a Cruz supporter, with Trump second on the list.

But eff Cruz.

He is a dud.

I would stay home rather than vote for that smiling Harvard snake.

I know what Cruz meant. It was about NYC and the insanity it seems from the outside. The people in NYC are generally high-income. They elected a marxist/communist mayor who is tearing apart the police department who keep crime below the exploding level. They have Huuuge tax rates. It is the equivalent of a Jews for hitler movement.

You don’t know jacksquat about New York. The Bronx voted for Obama 83-16. Obama got almost as many votes in NYC as Romney got in the entire state. Go take a stroll through Fort Apache, Bed Sty or the projects in the eastern Bronx some night and have your wife let me know how you made out.

And then Trump politicizes 9/11 along with the commie Mayor and Governor.

How so as it pertains to Trump "politicizing 9/11"?

Trump’s irrlevant response to Cruz’s “New York Values” statement was the equivalent of a Liberal trying to play the Race Card.

The people here who thought Trump looked good and that Cruz erred have their heads so far up Trump’s rear it’s pathetic. These people are not only NOT conservatives, but they have no business being anywhere near a voting booth.

As Levin pointed out, you’d have to be a moron not to know that Cruz wasn’t referring to Cops or rescue workers or anything to do with 9/11. He was referring to the liberal culture and mindset while pointing out Trump’s LONG connection to it.

Guess that means we can’t talk about the Washington Cartel anymore since Trump will bring up the Pentagon. Maybe we can’t talk about Hollywood values because Trump will talk about the San Bernadino tragedy.

Trump’s a loser and a clown. I’m glad I’m smart enough to figure this out.

This dumb attack will cost Cruz votes in Florida (full of retired New Yorkers).

Everyone already knows that Trump is from New York.

This attack just makes Cruz look dumb and mean.

Maybe he should bad mouth the terrorists with the time he still has. He should leave New Yorkers alone.

“No, because the rest of the country knows exactly what Cruz meant about “New York value””

Uh, not the rest of the country. And not “exactly”, either. A FEW people here at FR have an idea, and a FEW other conservatives that pay attention have an idea, but the average person really has no idea what “New York Values” are, and certainly not “exactly”.

You could walk down almost any street in the USA and ask this question, and everyone would give a different answer. For example, my wife, who worked in NY half her life in Manhattan, said it was about promiscuous sex, but that’s not at all what Cruz said in the debate, and this from a person who lived and worked there!

What it REALLY was, was a nebulous, ad hominem attack against Trump that was couched as a slur on the entire population of an entire state. It has blown up in Cruz’s face ENORMOUSLY, and in effect, between that and his patently absurd NBC response claiming Trump wasn’t NBC, Cruz has knocked himself out of the race, as the polls will show in the next couple of weeks.

Whether you agree or not, or whether you like it or not, that’s actually the reality of the situation.

Cruz made a point that New York City politics are extreme left. Trump attempted to turn that into a Cruz attack on 9/11 responders. I think that attempt will fail in the long run. I certainly hope it does.

New York, like California and other libtard dens, is a lost cause to conservatives.

Trump may have endeared himself for a moment to liberals but reminding conservatives that he is a New Yorker doesn’t gain him anything.

Well no, not really, but I guess we might find out. I suppose all we really need to do is just go ahead and elect a New York Liberal, that will fix everything.
