No Movement That Embraces Trump Can Call Itself Conservative
National Review ^ | September 5, 2015 | Jonah Goldberg

Posted on 01/15/2016 9:09:41 PM PST by TBP

I’m at a total loss to understand why serious pro-lifers take him at his word. He’s been all over the place on Planned Parenthood, and when asked who he’d like to put on the Supreme Court, he named his pro-choice-extremist sister.

[I]n the last month, Trump has contemplated a flat tax, the fair tax, maintaining the current progressive tax system, a carried-interest tax, a wealth tax, and doing nothing. His fans respond, “That shows he’s a pragmatist!”

No. It shows that he has absolutely no ideological guardrails whatsoever. Ronald Reagan once said, “Government is like a baby. An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other.” Trump is close to the reverse. He’s a mouth at the wrong end of an alimentary canal spewing crap with no sense of responsibility.

In his embarrassing interview with Hugh Hewitt Thursday night, Trump revealed he knows less than most halfway-decent D.C. interns about foreign policy. Twitter lit up with responses about how it doesn’t matter and how it was a gotcha interview. They think that Trump’s claim that he’ll just go find a Douglas MacArthur to fix the problem is brilliant. Well, I’m all in favor of finding a Douglas MacArthur, but if you don’t know anything about foreign policy, the interview process will be a complete disaster. Yes, Reagan delegated. But he knew enough to know to whom to delegate.

[F]or the last five years no issue has united the Right more than opposition to Obamacare. Opposition to socialized medicine in general has been a core tenet of American conservatism from Day One. Yet, when Republicans were told that Donald Trump favors single-payer health care, support for single-payer health care jumped from 16 percent to 44 percent.

... Why would it matter if he was a Conservative or not. The only thing that matters is he closes the borders and scares the illegals the hell out.
CAN YOU SAY SUPREME COURT? Do you really trust your progressive buddy to appoint conservatives especially after he TRASHED SCALIA?
If so I would love to know why. My bottom line. But then I am not infatuated with him.
You do know his immigration makes them leave but they can come right back? Please look that up if you do not know.
He said it, I heard it. Couple of articles on the web today including his son’s own words.
PLEASE DO NOT GROW THE LEFT WING OF THE SUPREME COURT, GOD HELP US ALL.

Yes, you can be pragmatic and principled. It just takes a bit more intelligence.

It’s funny. I post that list again and again, and there never is a valid push back from Trump haters. Like they say, Truth Trumps all career politicians. Career politicians are all similar to obstacle course horses. They jump or turn left or turn right as ordered by their rider master, who are in reality the ultra-rich donors of all career politicians.

You will see lot of old stuff dredged up by Cruzers. It is only 2 weeks to Iowa and desperation is setting in.

Jonah, do you not understand how FURIOUS conservatives are with the GOP? They have lied repeatedly and proved themselves total cowards in defending conservatives causes.

Conservatives don’t like Trump. But they are not about to support Jeb Bush or Christie or Rubio. Rubio SOLD OUT with the gang of eight. These guys are all establishment.

Trump, Cruz and Carson have been the leaders because they are outsiders. The GOPe HATES Cruz because he associates with the Tea Party. The GOPe hates the Tea Party more than Hillary Clinton.

If pinheads like you bothered getting out into the Red States and actually talked to conservatives, you would know all of this.

I get a kick out of many who proclaim Trump is not a conservative. So why are these people powerless to elect a ^true conservative^ as president? Because none of those so called ^good^ conservatives RESONATE with majority of people. Why do you think Cruz is behind Trump by double digits in most polls? Only a former democrat, divorced, and with Hollywood background and transformed conservative such as Ronald Reagan can RESONATE with voters.

What exactly have the ^true conservatives^ in congress accomplished?

Obamacare scrapped?
Illegals deported?
Wall built?
Anchor babies outlawed?
National debt reduced?
Abortion restricted?
China trade deficit reduced?
Food stamp growth curbed?
Welfare growth reduced?
Fraud in Medicare & Social Security under control? (25% of Medicare payments go to fraudulent claims, and there are tens of thousands of people over age 110 still getting social security checks automatically)

If Trump can deliver any 3 of above, he is more than enough conservative for most rational people.

Trump is conservative on these issues:

Pro life since at least 2011, wanted to ban partial birth abortion as far back as 2000.
Pro Traditional marriage. ^Gay rights is not my thing.^
Pro capital punishment ^Capital punishment isn't uncivilized; murderers living is^
Hold Judges accountable
Opposes ^Common core is a disaster^ Teach citizenship, quit ^dumbing down^.
Anti education unions (2000)
For school choice
^Climate Change is a hoax^
^No Cap-and-Tax^
For drilling our own.
On Environment ^Good development enhances the environment^
Stressed the importance of a strong family & culture of life (2015)
Supports Israel
Opposes Iran deal and letting Iran obtain the bomb.
Wants to crush ISIS quickly.
Wants a military so strong no one will challenge us.
Against unbalanced trade deals that kill American jobs.
Against warrant-less government surveillance of citizens.
Is against having a high national debt. Warns that $24T is a point of no return.
Against gun control
For assault weapon ban but says the AR-15 shouldn't be considered an assault weapon.
Wants to repeal Obamacare and replace it with market driven polices and increased competition among insurance companies.
Wants to increase military spending.
Will close the border to illegals
Will send the criminals and sponges back.
Will deport all illegals but will let the hard working ones go through the legal process to come back.
Against Anchor babies
Knows unemployment is much higher than official stats.
Will bring jobs back through better trade negotiation.
Attended military academy and Wharton Business School.
Stood up for Birthers and challenged Obama on his fraud.
Believes USA is ^the greatest force for freedom the world has ever known^
Wants to honor commitments on Social Security and Medicare, which we can afford to do if he gets the economy going full steam.
Wants to reduce the fraud in disability and other programs.
Against marriage penalties in tax code.
Wants to simplify tax code with just 3 simple brackets.
Wants to reduce income taxes and reduce corporate tax.
Wants to rebuild our infrastructure.
Wants to apply welfare-to-work to 76 other welfare programs (2011)
Doesn't have time for political correctness.
Not afraid to call out either party or both when they are wrong.
Not a puppet to rich campaign donors. Go Trump 2016! Born in America of two US Citizen Parents! A true Natural Born Citizen!

That is what I used to think.

I actually got a lot smarter because I could clearly see that pragmatism was not working.

Are liberals pragmatic?

At all?

No, they are dogmatic and that dogma they believe is principle.

Can you make a deal with a democrat?

Deals require pragmatism. I don’t believe in deals with libs. Therefore I don’t believe in pragmatism. Its a failed policy.

I could go on and on and on....but I’m not and have made my point.

This forum has become almost useless.

With the constant and multiple times per day repeating of the same old stuff we’ve read for seven months, it all becomes noise that most of us just tune out

At this point you don’t care what Ted has done.

We don’t care what Trump has done.

We’ve heard it all. We’ve made up our mind.

OK.....now that you have posted what the campaign has claimed are Trump’s principles and policies, I would now ask you to take each one and prove it.

I already know that you cannot.

Thank you!
Immigration and border control are important.
Killing Obamacare is important.
The sad state of the military is important.
The economy is important.
BUT, if the next POTUS screws the pooch by appointing liberals to SCOTUS the country is lost.

The next president will appoint between 2-4 justices to SCOTUS.
THAT will be the real legacy of the man or woman we elect in November 2016.

Cruz’s legacy on Supreme Court Justices will be recruiting John Roberts to the Bush team in 2000. This was Cruz’s first assignment and Cruz gave us Cruz’s good friend John Roberts who gave us Obamacare.

I concur, I don’t know either.

But it should be interesting.

It looks to me that for now it will be the status quo.

I generally take a little time off the forum during heated primaries and elections every 4 to 8 years. (Bush ran unopposed)

I am just waiting to pick the time...no opus...just a hiatus and a return to lurking..It seems to be the only way to maintain sanity at times..and to refrain from losing ones temper and getting zotted...

When I come back, it seems most of the drama is over but the recriminations about the vote. I can live with that.

Guessing it also doesn’t matter that Trump voted for nobama in 2008. Mighty curious conservative that does that.

“Conservatives have spent more than 60 years arguing that ideas and character matter.”

Trump winning the nomination throws all that away.
