WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama on Saturday proposed a set of changes to the U.S. unemployment insurance system that he says would offer more security to out-of-work Americans and encourage experienced workers to rejoin the workforce, even if it means taking a pay cut.

Why would we need a new unemployment entitlement when the economy is booming and we’re at full employment? /s

Where I come from they exhaust their benefits and look for a job to get fired from. Their dole keepers make it very hard to successfully show that they got fired for negligence or not showing up or much of anything. They always get fired because of the evil employer out to get them.

Either unemployment is too good or wages are too low. I suspect a little of both. Driving a truck is not an entry level job and merits a living wage to support a family. At least it used to. Hire the low end or pay very little and see what it gets you. Ever have a liability claim? One of those will make hiring competence and paying it well look cheap.

I can see businesses paying employees less and letting the government make up the difference.

Don’t fall for the Obama-logic. Continuing to take money from taxpayers is not “getting off the dole”.

Let us pray this goes nowhere. It is an election year stunt to give the Dem’s a chance to dress up as Santa.

Interesting that the AP did not offer an explanation of how this will get paid for.

Unemployment is a concern for those of us that own businesses, I just got my rate in the mail today and it defines how much we have to pay each quarter into the fund and it is based on our earned rate, but it can be raised at any time. So let’s imagine a bottom rate and the company pays .003% on payroll, then the cap is 7.5%. It would be a way for Obama to shut down small business to have a 7 1/2 % increase.

Might shock a few people, this already exists. When I lost my job in 2010, and took a lower paying job, unemployment insurance made up the difference for several years, until 2012.

"offer more security to out-of-work Americans and encourage experienced workers to rejoin the workforce, even if it means taking a pay cut."

Sounds like redistribution of wealth via unemployment INSURANCE (we buy that, you know).

So, the Fed is going to suggest to all these white-collar workers take jobs mopping and cleaning toilets at the local convenience store while previously-unemployed get a raise.

Sounds fair - to the Obamanation.

In 1983 before the oilfield crashed and burned (as it is now again crashing and burning) I earned 50k a year after taxes. Today that would be about 125K. In 1984 I earned less than 10K. Using Obama’s formula you the taxpayer should make up the difference? If such I would have thought it would be a hell of deal and continued to drink Single Malt Whiskey and my hedonistic life would have continued, god I miss those times.

However, faced with the reality of economics I sold my house, sold my airplane and went back to school and became a pharmacist and life has been good. I should have sold my wife but that is a different story. :) :) :)

yeah, thanks for snapping me back to reality lol.

if you’re unemployed and getting the max, 400 in NY, chances are you had a pretty good job to being with, so you will make a lot more than unemployment anyway.

my better half just got laid off. she was making 75k in advertising in manhattan. 400 doesn’t cut it. she doesn’t need and wouldn’t qualify for the “program”

and if you are only getting 150 a week, then your job was low pay to begin with but much more than unemployment, and you shouldn’t need monetary incentive from freebies to go back to work.

my bad.

i agree with your statement.

truck drivers should get paid well. hard job and i couldn’t do it. maybe 20 years ago i could.

better half just got laid off. making 75k in NYC. now 400 a week.

she needs NO incentive to look for a job. the staggering pay difference is incentive enough.

what happens a lot here is people collect and then work off the books.

you shouldn’t have to bribe people to do the right thing.

my bad

Obama
SOTU Wage Insurance announcement went unnoticed

…there should be other ways both parties can improve economic security. Say a hardworking American loses his job — we shouldnt just make sure he can get unemployment insurance, we should make sure that program encourages him to retrain for a business thats ready to hire him. If that new job doesnt pay as much, there should be a system of WAGE INSURANCE in place so that he can still pay his bills. And even if hes going from job to job, he should still be able to save for retirement and take his savings with him. That’s the way we make the new economy work better for everyone.

I see it all the time. People use disability and a heap of other benefits paid for by taxpayers to subsidize off the books work for cash. They don’t have to work to cover the basics and they do work for the extras when they want something.
