Trump, April 15, 2009: 'I Don't March with the Tea Party'
The National Review ^ | January 19, 2016 | Jim Geraghty

Posted on 01/19/2016 7:41:57 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Today's Morning Jolt looks at the rumors surrounding Trump's "major announcement and special guest."

If you consider Ted Cruz the conservative ideal or near-ideal in terms of philosophical grounding, legal perspective, and ideological rigor - and the case for that seems pretty self-evident - then watching Tea Party leaders flock to Trump over him is pretty damn disappointing.

April 15, 2009 is largely seen as the birth date of the Tea Party movement. Here's what Trump was saying that day about President Obama:

TRUMP: Well, I think he's sort of a guy that just has a wonderful personality, a good speaker, somebody that people trust. And I also think that the comparison with his predecessor is so different - it's so huge that it really has made a great impact on people.

I think that he's really doing a nice job in terms of representation of this country. And he represents such a large part of the country.

I mean, to think that a black man was going to be elected president - I watched television for years where the great political analysts were saying maybe in 50, maybe in 100 years.

Here's a man that not only got elected, I think he's doing a really good job.

Now, the sad part is that he can't just do a good job. He's got to do a great job. Because if he does a good job, that's not good enough for this country. That's how bad the country has become.

KING: Do you assess him as a champion?

TRUMP: Oh, yes, he's a champion. I mean, he won against all odds. If you would have looked - when he first announced, people were giving him virtually no chance. And he's just done something that's amazing.

KING: More on Donald Trump...

TRUMP: He's totally a champion.

Later in that interview:

KING: You're not going to march with the tea party?

TRUMP: I don't march with the tea party. But I'll tell you what, they have a good point, because when you see the kind of money that this country is - to use a horrible expression, Larry, I know you've never heard this - but that this country is pissing away, I can understand where they're coming from.

Trump went on to defend the TARP bailouts: "If they didn't stuff the banks with money, we'd be in depression number two right now, Larry. I mean, we would be strongly in depression number two. So they did the right thing in putting money into the banks."

Trump, the guy who hosted two fundraisers for Charlie Crist in 2009. He donated to Harry Reid over Sharron Angle in 2010.

Trump, the guy who donated $50,000 to make Rahm Emanuel the mayor of Chicago.

In the founding days of the Tea Party, Donald Trump was exactly what they were fighting agains... and now some of those adherents have embraced him fully.

In 1992 we were told B Clinton’s past, his character, didn’t matter.

24 years later and the country is still paying the price for that screw up.

In 2008 we were told Obama’s past didn’t matter.

The country will be lucky to survive that screw up.

We’re now being told third time’s a charm.

Just keep doing the same thing over and over and somehow the results will be different.

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?

When you ignore the past you regret the future, it never fails.

The amendment that Cruz put forward was a poison pill to kill the gang of 8 bill. I am not sure if you knew that and or you are purposely spinning it otherwise.

It sounds like to me you are backing Trump, I would like someone on this forum to tell me how they can back Trump when he gave money to Sharpton and Hillary. And please do not cite the pay to play argument, that should never work with a true conservative. Conservatives preach principles before profit, always...

So you are a Cruz supporter and you refer to those that aren’t as “buffoons”. Your support is obviously going to go through the roof with that tactic. Keep it up, it’s a sure winner!

>> They like to scream and fling poo.

Don’t say anything at all if you can’t say something nice! So let’s just agree that they are REALLY REALLY GOOD at screaming, and flinging poo. :-)

He was also talking about what a great job 0bama was doing and how much he liked him.

Then he saw which way the wind was blowing.

This is directly from your article: Clearly Cruz wasn’t praising Obama’s progressivism, he was praising how effective his campaign was: “He deplores the direction Obama has taken at home and abroad, but praises him as someone who has “demonstrated real courage” in fighting for his principles. And his admiration for the “potent” Obama election machine is so great he admits buying copies of Democratic campaign manager David Plouffe’s memoirs to hand out to his own staff during his successful 2012 Senate race. “Obama ran a masterful campaign. It was a grassroots guerilla campaign, encircled the Hillary campaign before they knew what hit them,” the Texas senator said.”

And I'm not saying I agree with everything he's doing. I do agree with what they're doing with the banks. Whether they fund them or nationalize them, it doesn't matter, but you have to keep the banks going.

Put a pin in that. For the first fiscal "emergency" in the Trump administration.

God forbid.

First, you insult the poster by suggesting said poster did not read or understand the article.
Second, you try to “educate” the poster as to what the article really says or means.
The dissension on this site has become very unpleasant. If site traffic is down, it is because of this.

I think Trump mania in some people has exceeded their logic when choosing candidates based on political positions. They support him because they believe his grandiose rhetoric instead of looking at his past.

This is not seven years old:

It's strange to recall how much we all demanded vetting of Obama. But, vetting Trump sets hair on fire. Bringing forth his own words from his own past elicits widespread panic.

Strange and sad and dangerous.

Yes, the old let’s NATIONALIZE the banks “happy-talk.”

Scary, scary, scary - and totally believable in context with Trump.

“”As an old Freeper I recall Trump getting hammered on this forum for the King interview. I wonder if the same bashers in 2009 are the Trumpsters in 2016?

One of the obnoxious Trump harpies has a posting history of demolishing Trump in 2012 then getting on her knees for him in 2016.

Here is a very recent article in which Cruz praises Obama.

Fail. Ted "praised" Obama's tactics. The nuts and bolts stuff. You might want to not bookmark that.

Why should I trust him over Cruz who has been consistent on the issues in this article all along?

If you can't see it, no explanation is possible.

An informed adult with experience since the 50s can't be judged by someone whose view of the world and history, all of it, is defined entirely by what's happened since he was born.

Often less than 30 years, LOL!

The past is fact; based on circumstances long gone.

Those who will not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.

Six months ago Cruz was a hero on this forum. Now some of the crap I see posted would look extreme on the Daily Beast.

It amazes me too.
