First, the entire premise of Trumpâs plan to retaliate against China is erroneous. Trump cites the U.S.-China trade deficit as proof that the dominant Chinese, via pernicious currency manipulation, are taking weak Americaâs manufacturing jobs, thereby justifying his tariff plans.
However, as I explained in The Federalist last fall, the U.S. manufacturing sector has been (until the last month or so) setting production (and export!) records, and almost 90 percent of the decline in U.S. manufacturing jobs between 2000 and 2010 was caused by productivity gains (robots and computers), rather than import competition.
In fact, a recent Ball State study found that, âHad we kept 2000-levels of productivity and applied them to 2010-levels of production, we would have required 20.9 million manufacturing workers. Instead, we employed only 12.1 million.â So unless Trump wants to destroy all the robots, those jobs just arenât coming back, tariff or not.

I think this was posted yesterday.
Trump is right. The trade deficit is real.
The total output of manufacturing in an ever-populous world is not as relevant as the percentage share of total manufacturing in the world.
Why is this so hard to figure out for some?
I think Smoot Holley tariff act and I get nervous.
These experts would tell you it was raining while urinating on your shoes. We need real domestic economic growth not theories from the 1700’s.
As always you will not read or acknowledge anything is wrong with your guy. Is there not a single hardcore trumpee who might admit he does not walk on water? Or that not everyone worships him with blind adoration?
Smoot Hawley
But it’s really going to put Cruz over the top if they pretend it’s new and post it again!!!
They are both right.
Then post it again when it’s a month old.
And maybe even again when it’s 17 years old.
Sigh.
I haven't heard a factory whistle since the 70's
Coal mines are dead and dieing
And a few other et cetera's
When I saw the comment about robotics, my plebian brain envisioned only the automotive industry
So I went to the article to read it and I came away with a lot of "explanation" about what's wrong with Trump
I conclude this is nothing more than a hit piece against a man that probably knows what I know .... my local WalMart has a bank of 16 registers I've never seen completely worked ... and the aisles are a LOT wider now that there is less product
I'm just a guy that sees stuff.
Whatever helps the cause of St. Ted is what we shall do.
Though it does beg the question: if an old article is posted again and nobody gives a damn about it either time, was it really ever even posted at all? :p
I think our trade relations with China, and with everybody else, should be guided solely by what is best for America, and for the American people.
Having said that, if you want more manufacturing in America, the main problem isn’t China, or any other competitor. The real problem is over-regulation, over-taxation, and our form of taxation. Get the grubby mitts of government off of business, and we will out-compete and out-produce anyone on the planet.
I'll probably post it tomorrow. Have you read it?
We were a net exporter and debt holder then. The importers and debtors recovered much faster.
Not listening to your hysterical rantings means people think he walks on water?
You seem to have an overinflated sense of your own importance.
Should we go ahead and report you now for breaking the forum rules and causing more work for the moderators who have to remove duplicates from the database?
Smoot Hawley did nothing really. Trade was less than 4% of the economy in 1935 so it couldn't have a big affect.
Donald Trump does not walk on water.
He is the only candidate (besides Dr Ben) that is a man of action rather than just theory
You asked for an acknowledgement from a Trump supporter and although a Dr Ben supporter, I can ptrvide the testimony requested
