GOP establishment warms to Trump — and remains cool toward Cruz
The Washington Post ^ | 1/21/2016 | Robert Costa, Philip Rucker and David A. Fahrenthold

In the past few days, Trump has received unlikely public praise from GOP luminaries who said they would prefer him to his main rival, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.

In private, some veteran conservative Republicans have been reaching out to Trump. And Trump himself called the ultimate establishment figure in Washington, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, for a talk late last year.

One other point. Everyone is attaching Cruz for taking out a loan against his own investments...

But I don’t hear a DAMNED THING from Trump supporters about how the Mouth of Manhattan screwed over Investors with using Junk Bonds to fund his Building Projects.

It’s no wonder he thought TARP was a good thing, at least the taxpayers would foot the bill to his crooked deal. He probably wanted to do it again! He made out well...

That’s the NY way.

I don’t think anyone understands.....if they tried to take down Trump first, that would leave Cruz as the nominee. The E-publicans need to hollow out the competition first and then go after Trump before the convention.

Hitting Trump with this casino stuff is going to be a total fail. Its old news and he did nothing illegal. It certainly isn’t going to take him down. LOL!

That may well be true. Everyone will know also, where he stands on all his positions he has fought for.

Now with the Mouth of Manhattan expect to be deeply disappointed in what you THINK you are getting.

Exactly right, at least that will be the intent. We'll see if Trump will be the victim of rope-a-dope.

It's not about the Mouth. It's about those supporting him. He created a project that went belly up using Junk bonds and he supported TARP that used taxpayer money to bail out Banks that ended up holding those Junk Bonds. Trump made money on the deal before the junk bonds exploded, the Banks got bailed out and the Taxpayers footed the bill. NO it wasn't illegal but it was sleazy as hell.

Wait until Trump names McConnell as his VP. It’s coming, but it will be too late.

I didn’t read the rest of the thread, since it’s the same back and forth as always here, and that’s exactly what the GOPe wants.

Let’s take a look at the facts on the ground:

1. GOPe is backing off of Trump.

2. GOPe is starting to act viciously towards Cruz.

3. Cruz, if you ignore the specific attacks from the GOPe/Democrud group, is about the best candidate we can field from strictly ideological and intellectual qualifications.

4. Jeb Bush, the most glaring example of a GOPe candidate, IS NOT ATTACKING TRUMP OR CRUZ in any of his TV ads. The attacks are on RUBIO.

In fact, the TV ads are not even officially his, they are a SuperPAC’s - Right To Rise. So if it’s such a huge misstep, it’s campaign experts doing it, not even Bush himself.

GIVEN ALL THESE FACTS, here’s what I think:

The GOPe is going to cut the legs out from under Trump, leaving Cruz.

When Cruz becomes frontrunner, they have already laid the groundwork to take him out, with the assistance of Trump’s prior attacks.

Rubio remains. Hence, Bush’s SuperPAC piling on Rubio, building himself up as the candidate who can beat Shrillary.

Final showdown: Bush vs. Clinton, Cankles wins.

Call me stupid, or clueless, or whatever other name you want to. Because I would love to be absolutely dead wrong. I hope I’m the most wrong guy on this forum and hope to receive the largest amount of abuse for being so.

If Trump does get the nomination, watch all of the Trumpkins that have trashed Cruz supporters, indeed anyone who didn't support the Donald, in the most vicious and personal terms, suddenly start having a kumbaya moment, and telling everyone how we now need to come together to beat Hillary.

Well, I can't speak for anyone but myself and my family. But after holding my nose for Romney, I promised I would not vote for another liberal posing as a conservative as "the lesser of two evils". I wouldn't do it for Bush, and I won't do it for the Donald. If Trump gets the nomination we will either vote 3rd party or not vote in the presidential election - and I will try to influence as many people as possible to follow our lead.

Immigration?

You mean the dear leaders touch back amnesty idea where 11m illegals become legal on an expedited basis to drive up unemployment, drive down wages and drive up welfare and deficits? Oh and does anyone not think the pressure to make them citizens and leftists voters won’t work once they are here legally??

But don’t worry, the dear leader says it will be great, so it shall be great.

And the zombies all nod the head in agreement.........

Good news for Senator Burr, he would rather vote for Sanders than Cruz.
The GOPe needs that crony pork to keep flowing at any cost, and they know Cruz is the only one with the brains and guts to oppose them.

You make great points.
The irony is the zombies are most concerned about immigration, but they have no clue Trump to this day supports touch back amnesty, which legalizes 11m illegals. Of course, with Trump, you never know what he will actually do because he comes out with new and contradictory statements daily it seems.
No conservative philosophy guides him, only ego and what is best for Trump.

LMAO!!!!!!! “

They believe he makes Mexico build a bridge across it for him.

NO, No, better yet, that he makes a deal with God to part the water just like Moses did the Red Sea, for him citing 2 Corinthians at a rally, he makes great deals.

Just to be fair, a Cruz POTUS would not shut down the IRS.

"The difference between Trump and Cruz supporters is that Trump supporters do not believe their candidate walks on water."

Maybe not you Lodi, but if you aren't seeing the legion of Trumpers who ARE acting like they think he walks on water and acting like a personality cult then sorry but you might wanna get your eyes checked.

Only one candidate's supporters post comments saying their guy will "lead a new American revolution and destroy the Washington status quo", win an electoral college landslide of historic epic portions including 40% of the black vote and 65% of the Hispanic vote, winning back all the "Reagan Democrats" (who apparently will return from six feet under just vote for him) purge all Muslims from America and get the whole country to say 'Merry Christmas', get Congress to fall in line with whatever he proposes, get the other Republican to grovel before him for the privilege of being his running mate (and possibly name conservative rivals to SCOTUS too, and somehow get Chief Justice Roberts to suddenly resign out of nowhere and step aside, all as part of his epic revolution plan), and build a massive impenetrable 2000 mile wall along the US border his first year in office.

Any guesses which candidate's supporters make those claims?
