Mountain biker Damian Hiley was hours into a Saturday ride on a West Sycamore Canyon trail in Scripps Ranch — one he’s been excited to try out for some time — when he and his cycling group came upon a man standing in the middle of the trail, a gun at his hip.

Actually, I can give many examples of where military bases have preserved their land to such a excellent extent that liberal hate-everything-military types want to turn them into nature reserves because everything around the bases has been developed.

Quite true, due to EPA over reach. Every military installation we have is mission constrained by the leftist environmental nuts.

Why aren’t the marines on the border stopping criminals and drugs from entering the country rather than stealing bikes from Americans?

1. That's not a Marine's job
2. Obama won't let them.

Correction: Change item D to “...a sidearm with no ammo.”

Now the Feds have gone and done it. It wasn’t a problem upsetting the ranchers with their extensive Western land holdings and heavy handed methods, but now they’ve upset the cycling crowd! Watch out!!

Around here, the cycling crowd is about the most powerful lobby in the county and are used to getting just about anything they want. A year or two ago, the Colorado Native Plant Society did what they called a "bioblitz" and went over the biggest local mountain biking area (Tabaguache) looking for endangered species. I don't think they found any. If they had, they would have presumably called for the area to be closed. That would have been a true clash of the Titans—the irresistable cycling force against the immovable environmental object.

Know the area and the bikers were just trying to get away with this. They knew darned good and well where they were.

One significant difference between the past decades and now: If someone were hit with a ricochet, the Marines would be sued (and lose) for not properly marking the area, despite the fact that the signs were stolen. And, in our “modern” environment, they’d move heaven and earth to fry some young PFC for carelessly discharging his weapon.

I would think a base would at least have a fence or something.

Bikers should have faked cooperating for a moment, and then suddenly fled on the bikes.

My USMC son took me on some 'backcountry rides'; some of the hills you push the bike up.
You can buy an OK used car for the cost of his Rocky Mountain bike.

An interesting race!
Two miles, two highly motivated participants, one push/riding his $$$ bike, wearing lug shoes/ shorts, the other wearing baggy pants and boots.

Hey guys! Did you see me make that catch!!!

Too bad he fell at the end and was bruised!

Because today's' liberal youth nothing-is-my-fault would just keep ignoring them and trespass over and over again.

It's still theft.

“How do they get away with taking the bikes?”

Uh...because they had guns?

Hah. True. What gets me is this is probably some liberal-assed, and there are those who are liberal-assed in the Marines, 2nd Lieutenant who ordered them to wait inside the boundary of the base so they could issue violations and take the bikes, instead of setting up smaller groups where the trails enter the base and just turning people back and explaining why.

I’ve run across those types of bikers - even at a trail head that states: No Bikes they get mad if you don’t get off the trail to let them by. Some trails are fragile and those knobby tires just chew them up; there’s a reason bikes are banned but liberal special citizens ignore them because they’re special.

This was being discussed on a private forum I am on, with comments from a guy who is local. Apparently everyone knew they were encroaching on the edge of the Marine base, but were doing it anyway. It’s worth noting there’s an EOD range not far away to the interior of the base.

All in all, this seems like a reasonable approach to making a high-profile bust that will discourage cyclists from future encroachment.

At least (supposedly), they’ll get their bikes back after the fine is paid. The fine will probably be miniscule compared to the price of the bikes.
