The GOP establishment capitulates to Donald Trump (it's what they do best!!)
washingtonpost.com ^ | 1/22/16 | Greg Sargent

Here's an interesting confluence of events. On the same day that the news is filled with accounts of the GOP establishment coming to terms with Donald Trump, the Donald releases his first attack ad against Ted Cruz - a spot that doubles down on exactly the same sort of immigration rhetoric the GOP establishment types had hoped the GOP would move away from, for the good of the party.

Numerous articles this morning chronicle the various ways that GOP establishment figures are beginning to accommodate themselves to the possibility of a Trump nomination. The Post reports that some in the GOP establishment are privately reaching out to Trump, and others are persuading themselves that Trump could actually win the general election. Bloomberg reports that deep-pocketed GOP donors are coming around to the view that Trump can be negotiated with.

So in other words, he was arrogant, entitled, careless and lazy.

But yeah, it's OUR fault. Reminds me of a Hitler quote at the end of the war:

Trusting conservatives to be conservative is arrogant, entitled, careless and lazy?

And a Hitler reference.

I'll have to invoke Godwin's Law on that one. (Though, I'm sure you'll have to Google that one.)

You guys sure have to contort yourselves to keep justifying your support for Trump.

“Trusting conservatives to be conservative is arrogant, entitled, careless and lazy?”

A candidate that refused to do the grunt work, but instead just assumed that he could just show up and be rewarded with votes IS ARROGANT, LAZY, ENTITLED, AND CARELESS.

We aren’t Cruz’s property with a contractual expectation to toss ourselves at his feet on command.

“I’ll have to invoke Godwin’s Law on that one.”

Actually no. I didnt call anyone Hitler or a Nazi, just pointing out the attitude is similar to an historic quote.

“Though, I’m sure you’ll have to Google that one.”

Chortle chortle...so witty. Of course I could NEVER know what that was....you have me so cornered, knowledgeable wizard of web cliches.

Frankly I doubt you’ve even heard of the quote anyway.

“You guys sure have to contort yourselves to keep justifying your support for Trump.”

Actually we dont have to JUSTIFY ourselves to you at all. You dont own nor have the right to control anyone’s choices.

But I’m sure you think you are defenders of “liberty” as you try.

“Trying to get a piece of the political pie.”

That’s exactly what it is. They tried to defeat him and failed miserably. And “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” is their motto. They’ve clearly joined with the democrats and Obama (though that was voluntary).

The GOPe have surrendered on immigration and the wall without a single vote cast, or a shot fired. What a pathetic bunch.

Remember folks Trump hasn’t changed his positions - the GOPe have.

By the reaction of the Cruz knuckle draggers you'd think it was the other way around.

If the title had Cruz instead of Trump the knuckle dragging hypocrites would be shouting what a strong leader Cruz is from the roof tops and the revival tents.

Cruzs’ plan and it was a reasonable plan, was to wait for Trump to implode and then pick up the pieces. Good plan, only one problem, Trump never imploded. Everyone and I mean everyone underestimated Trump smarts. Trump is a genius and he knows how to play the media and how to play politics. He knows how to read the mood of the countrys’ working/middle classes. He will get things done in DC. No one will ever underestimate Donald Trump again.

So, I trust you won't be pissed, two years from now. Trump is president, and I pass you on the road in my federally mandated, driverless, Toyota Prius on the way to the welfare office because the revolving-door-illegal-aliens came back in through that "big, beautiful door" and took all of the jobs.

My bumper sticker will say: "Don't blame me, I voted for the conservative."

Oh gag!

Must be a great thing to sit there and pretend that the Cruz presidency is going to be 4-8 years of unmitigated perfection. I mean, when you can take a jr senator with little accomplishment, and just make up the results of an hypothetical administration where everything will go his way (a feat never accomplished in American history), I bet you can arrogantly make such a post.

The plan was basic and solid.

The problem was that it was basic. Any political novice could see it coming from a mile away.

The Cruz people overestimated their own “brilliance”, and took the Trump that they see in front of cameras at face value, assuming that he is a lightweight, forgetting that this man had honed his technique for 40 years!

Trump knew what was up, and sprung before he could be jumped.

Cruz is good at a lot of things, but the art of political war is not one of them.

No, it’s teh other way around. Trump, who gave to Democrats in 2010 heavily and to RINO Establishment candidates to stop the Tea party in 2014, is returning to his Establishment ways. He couldn’t keep up the facade for long.

I have no illusions that everything will go Cruz's way.

But at least I know what his way is.

Cruz is a known, conservative quantity and has a far longer conservative track record than Trump. Can you dispute that?

I'm not going to vote for a pig in a poke simply because I like the sound of his last few "oinks".

“I have no illusions that everything will go Cruz’s way.”

Then spare us anymore haughty posts pretending that you do.

A bag full of Cruz platitudes is no more valuable than from Trump.

You quoted: "Donald trump - "You know what? There's a point at which: Let's get to be a little establishment." We've got to get things done folks, OK? Believe me, don't worry. We're going to make such great deals."

You said: "Yes, Trump teamed up with the RINO establishment and then the Democrats can kill off conservatism once and for all."

Trump will do whatever, say whatever, he has to in order to win - winning is his goal. He has no inner core of beliefs so it does not matter what he says. The GOPe is smart enough to realize he can be moved to agree on anything they want and the Dems also know he can be moved to agree on anything they want.

They know Cruz will stick to his conservative principles and neither party in congress wants that. Trump is the perfect candidate for both congressional parties. The Dems prefer Clinton but will gladly take Trump instead of Cruz.

If Trump wins, both parties get what they want, a deal maker whose personal goal is to a deal in order to make a deal, a good deal, a wonderful deal, and he made the deal which is his goal to make a good deal, a great deal, the most wonderful deal ever made and he made it, the finest deal on earth, a really good, great deal.

“...pathetically admitting that Cruz's plan of waiting to the last minute to actually run and let Trump have the field to himself, was flat-out irresponsible.”

Cruz started his campaign in March, the first candidate to file, and Trump started his in June - you must have been on another planet not to know this.
