The BBC reports that in a document allegedly written by the Department of Religious Affairs of the East African country, polygamy for Eritreans is no longer a matter of choice.
By law, the men are now required to marry at least two wives, or face life imprisonment with hard labour. Similarly, women who attempt to prevent their husbands from exercising the law would spend the rest of their lives in jail.
According to the document, which has been circulating over the internet, the government of Eritrea, which is currently facing a shortage of male population following the civil war with Ethiopia, is willing to cover the necessary wedding and accommodation expenses in a show of good faith towards fulfilling the set mission. The memo is yet to receive official verification or be re-produced in the countryâs other national languages.

Both cruel and unusual.
Hubby always told me he didn’t believe in polygamy because he didn’t think any man should be allowed to disappoint two women at the same time.
Must marry both at the same time?
How about three?
Many of these people cannot even feed themselves and they are worried about the number of wives they have???
No further comment needed.
I smell a Sharia Law/Muslim rat.
Obviously demographics were not considered. If half the men have two wives, there will be no women left for the other half.
Is there anything that you can’t be forced to do by some government somewhere?
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber barons cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

The article says they have a shortage of men due to war.
“facing a shortage of male population following the civil war with Ethiopia, “
Sort of like what happened during the Munster Rebellion of 1535-35, large sex ratio imbalance.
Tough choice... I would have to think about it. When they say hard labor... just how hard?
How many countries will allow an asylum claim: “I couldn’t find a (first||second) wife.”
How do you have a civil war with another country?
Was it a really polite war?
The article says that there is a shortage of men.
Eritrea, which is currently facing a shortage of male population following the civil war with Ethiopia ...
Looks like they DID consider the demographics. In a couple of generations, though, they'll have to repeal the law.
I can see why some would choose life imprisonment with hard labor.
The punishment fits the crime, or is the crime worse?
In subsistence societies, "marriage" is not a matter of "romantic love." Rather, it is a no-nonsense issue whose economic aspects outweigh almost all other considerations.
As abhorrent as it may be to those of us who cherish Western values, what the Eritreans are doing might actually be a reasonable approach, at least for them.
Regards,
That’s just plain stupid. Polygamy has never been universal in any society on the planet, ever. It simply is unworkable, because the male to female ratio always hovers near 1-to-1, so at best, only half of the male population can ever have more than 1 wife before you run out of women!
