Another View -- Michael Reagan: Trump is no Reagan Republican
New Hampshire Union Leader ^ | January 26, 2016 | Michael Reagan

Posted on 01/27/2016 5:29:52 PM PST by JSDude1

Mr. Trump, I knew Ronald Reagan. And you’re no Ronald Reagan!

Of course, I am stealing that line — with a twist.

Donald Trump shouldn’t mind. He’s been stealing my dad for his own purposes. Trump frequently invokes Ronald Reagan’s name to defend his sudden, 180-degree switch from being a life-long, pro-Clinton Democrat to a Reagan Republican.

Both men did make a switch, but almost all the similarities between the two end there. Ronald Reagan’s odyssey from Hollywood liberal to conservative backer took place over almost two decades.

Starting with his 1964 “Time for Choosing” speech that galvanized Americans for Barry Goldwater, dad began a 16-year effort of crisscrossing America to support conservative candidates for office. My dad also served eight years as California’s governor. When he ran for President, he had a proven conservative track record.

Donald Trump doesn’t have one. In fact, Trump still can’t explain his sudden change from being a liberal Democrat. When dad ran in 1980, Trump donated the maximum amount to Jimmy Carter. As the Wall Street Journal reported, Trump also donated to a PAC for Walter Mondale, who ran against dad in 1984.Trump has criticized some candidates for their indiscretions made during their childhood. But what can you say for a grown adult who supported both Carter and Mondale over Ronald Reagan?

"One of my dad’s most important lessons to me was how to uncover a phony. He told me not to judge people by what they say; judge them by what they actually do. As President, dad used this “trust but verify” principle on the Soviets and it worked. Voters today should apply Reagan’s verify principle on Trump.During the 2008 election, Trump told CNN that he wanted President George W. Bush impeached. Then, during Obama’s first year in the White House, after he rammed through Congress a $800 billion stimulus and proposed a radical health care takeover, Trump praised the President, saying he was “amazing” and “truly phenomenal.” "-

I GUESS MICHAEL REAGAN is Rino now, huh. I guess he's a fake conservative because he opposes Trump!?

“Is he the gay son?”

No, that’s Ronnie Jr. Michael is the adopted son of Ronald Reagan and he’s the RINO one.

No, Michael Reagan has always been a GOPe RINO, long before anyone here paid any attention to Donald Trump.

“...from being a life-long, pro-Clinton Democrat to a Reagan Republican.”

That is so demonstratively untrue that it can be considered a lie.

I am a Reagan Republican, I voted Republican the first time for Reagan and have been a GOP conservative since then.

Trump has been a registered Republican since 1980, I guess all those pictures of Reagan shaking Trump’s hand means Trump is a Reagan Republican too.

Remember Reagan was a somewhat liberal SAG union leader, and a Democrat in Hollywood’s elite Democrat culture before he changed party.

Trump is for Jobs, Cops, Vets, 2nd Amendment, security at the borders, sending illegals back criminals first, reducing the size of government, sending Fed functions like education back to the states. Trump has been against funding Abortions, Planned Parenthood, Against anti Christian bigotry. Trump is for building the military up again.

All the above are Conservative principles Reagan espoused in almost every speech. Don’t tell me he isn’t more Conservative than Jeb, Ksick, Christie, Graham, Pataki and others.

Go Trump Go

I hope nobody here on FreeRepublic has any illusions about Donald Trump. Whether you like him or not, there’s no getting around the fact that when it comes to political principles as well as his track record, he is probably the most erratic, unreliable person ever to run for the White House.

Mike Reagan was adopted, he is a shameless Reagan name dropper, he would be nothing if he didn’t have the surname Reagan.

In fact if you know all about him he is a somewhat shady character, his Dad would never approve of.

I don’t have illusions since Trump was a liberal Democrat for nearly all his adult life and he was pro-amnesty, pro-choice and pro-Muslim.

Today he claims he has a change of heart. Tomorrow, after becoming President, he could cozy up with Pelosi and Reid. He’s clear on the record about it.

FR’s resident Trumpbots believe everything Trump tells them and they check their IQ at the door in deciding to back him.

Trump is a mix of Jesse Ventura and Arnold Schwarzenegger. I intend to vote for him as the GOP nominee with big reservations but I’m not under the false impression that he’s a conservative b/c he clearly isn’t one. Period.

I saw an article from New York voting Records archives.

You look it up that is 36 years. Don’t confuse contributing to Dems with being one.

I remember when Ed Koch was Mayor he had a hard time getting that Democrat mayor to let him build the Wallman skating rink for nothing because he wasn’t a Dem and Koch didn’t want a Republican getting credit for doing something that had been a boondoggle for almost a decade.

Even back then people thought Trump was planning to run for president on the Republican Ticket.
