Your friend was wrong. The plans DO exist. Check out the link a little further upthread about the F-1 update.

The decision to use the RD-180 was made in the Clinton administration (surprise, surprise, surprise).

Obama had nothing to do with it, except to the extent that he's had 7 years to fix it and has done nothing at all.

Yawn. So purchase flights of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 Heavy instead of ULA’s Atlas V. Just because one company is having a problem doesn’t mean the entire industry is dying.

You wouldn't build a Saturn V again for the same reason you wouldn't build a 1960 DeSoto automobile again. Technology has moved far beyond it.

You might enjoy this article.

We have at least two actual Saturn V's in museums, one at the Cape and one at Huntsville, as well as some stocks of parts still in storage. If you wanted to build one again, that's where you would start, not with paper plans.

Exactly. FH is supposed to launch around May this year. This is a ULA problem not a USA problem.

There was an article a long while back (Air&Space Magazine, I think) about building a Saturn V Mk.II

It would be next to impossible to do from either plans or straight reverse-engineering. Too much has changed in things like metallurgy and component standardization - a lot of the circa 1960s “standard” sized fittings arent made and doen’t exist anymore, some components would require the stand up of new industries.

It would be more cost effective to take just the general design parameters and aerodynamic shape and engineer everything else from scratch. But not nearly as cost effective as leveraging shuttle-era technology instead.

Thank him doubly - we are now so far behind in heavy lift capability that it will be virtually impossible to catch up - by 2020 Russia’s new tech super heavy lift will be online - 150 tons to orbit ... or more ...

Space exploration does not make muslims feel good about themselves. That is the number one declared mission of NASA in the Obamanation.

Great article. It dispels a number of false ideas about the importance of (and loss of) drawings, and about the process of “bringing back the [whatever]”.

His plan is on track.

Maybe we can get Mudslimes to make a rocket based on camel dung.

Did the Clinton administration mandate the use of the Russian engine? Or did Lockheed choose it because it was cheaper than developing their own?

That Muslim involvement sure is working well.

If an American company “cloned” an engine, it would be built in China like the next version of Boeing airliners.

Why don’t we use the reliable engine designs we had from the 60’s-70’s 80’s?

Are we that devoid of the capability of industrial out put we can’t build a rocket engine?

The latter; cheaper and technically superior. Clinton Administration okay’ed the deal.
