It looks like bullet holes in the windshield when the camera pans around to the front. So that gives the story, of them being fired upon so he took off, some credibility.
I hope those law enforcement agents feel good about gunning down an American, in cold blood, to save some government politicians crony deals.

Perhaps he was, but that’s one thing a person shouldn’t do in that situation. Also a person shouldn’t put themselves in that situation. He had plenty of opportunity to avoid it.
Why didn’t they kill the others?
Another video that clear shows he had a an old western-style holster on his right hip. Plus he’s clearly handling tools with his right hand.

Yep, appears to have holes in it. I’d say he was shot at least twice after he exited the vehicle. The only reason the LEO got hit was because he ran directly front of the vehicle. They were clearly trying to avoid a collision with the LEO vehicles.
His arm came down to counteract sinking in on the opposite leg. And because his arm came down— he was shot, and then shot again in the back. Utterly NO need for this. This was NOT San Bernardino. This is literally aggressive military style approach— when all that was needed was to arrest them in John Day. They didn’t want witnesses.
If you look slowly and closely you can see the red lasers that keep coming up on the man, even as he was clearly quite still on the snow. Many red lasers on his head. Got to look close and stop action the vid.
Well, that’s just my assessment from the video. I think they were shooting at the vehicle before it ever hit the snow. Can’t see it and that’s just a hunch. The vehicle was clearly attempting to avoid striking the road block which they came upon quick on a sweeping curve.
Maybe. A lot of pistoleros carried guns in holsters on both sides of their bodies. That doesn9t mean they’re right or left handed.
Many competent gunmen were/are proficient with both hands, say, in case one arm is incapacitated by some back-shootng coward.
Left handed holsters can be hard to find. Maybe they were borrowed. Who knows?
His companions should know if he was left handed or not.
I think he reacted from an initial shot to the body. In fact you can see him appear to flinch and drop an arm as if grabbing the wound. Then took another round from his left rear. In addition, I’d say rounds were fired at them before they ever hit the snow.
His actions and the fact the others remained inside the vehicle is probably what may have saved their lives. I'd like to see the remainder of the video and learn the truth about how many rounds, flash bangs, and tear gas was used in attempt to draw the others from inside the vehicle. And let's see the dash cam and body cam footage with audio.

The man defiantely was NOT charging at police- did he reach for coat before getting shot? Who knows- but in one video it looks like as he veered left into snowbank, the truck struck an officer who bolted out behind a vehicle- but the video is weird because the officer lurched really fast on the video- way too fast- like the video was edited-
The LEO probably thought they were going to ram the road block so he ran in the same direction they swerved, as they attempted to avoid striking the road block.
