Merkel's not former stasi. Not, at least, from what I've seen so far. She's one of the few of her generation, in her position (politically active) who weren't. She was passed by for top university positions, because of it.

I have seen articles (which used words like "suspected," "presumed," "possibly," "informant who chooses not to be named," etc.) which tried to tie her to the Stasi, but my own hunch is that those who tried unsuccessfully to recruit her, are now trying to defame her.

Not that I (or any of us) have full information about activities which were, by definition, covert and included a lot of convoluted counter-counter-counter agentry. However this article (LINK) is interesting and as believable as any.

Merkel is not a far-left anti-Christian. She is a center-Right (CDU, conservative for Germany) lifelong and still-faithful Lutheran. She's made some horrible --- truly horrible --- policy mistakes, but she at least is now on record saying the "Hajji" cadres will not be staying permanently.

“Merkel’s not former stasi”

Merkel, like her father, was a member of the East German Communist Party and a Stasi agent.

Merkel was born in Hamburg West Berlin. Her father was born a Catholic but became a Lutheran minister. He was the only German known to move from West Germany to East Germany in the 1950’s. From the late 1950’s through the 1980’s Merkel’s family was allowed to travel freely between East to West Germany. They also were allowed to possess two automobiles. This would not have happened if Merkel’s father had not had a special relationship with the communist regime, since such freedom and privileges for a Christian pastor and his family would have been otherwise impossible in East Germany.

Her fathers role was to keep track of Lutherans in East Germany and report their actions to his bosses at Stasi.

Angela Merkel was a member of the local Free German Youth(FDJ) the youth organization of the Communist Party. She was given special tutoring in Russian from Party members and won several Lenin prizes. Later, at the Academy of Sciences, she became a member of the FDJ district board and secretary for “Agitprop” (Agitation and Propaganda).

Merkel’s privilege of attending the university and going on for her doctorate would not have been possible for someone who was not a favored member of the Communist Party.

Her favorite professor and close companion at the University was Stasi agent and recruiter Hans-Jorg Osten. Though he was married, the Stasi agent and Merkel were inseparable and worked closely together.

The article you linked to has only one source, Merkel herself. It was impossible to attend the University in East Germany without being recruited by Stasi and Germans knew that. Therefore Merkel had to make up a story.

After the fall of the Berlin wall, Merkel rose very quickly in East German politics and after the unification of Germany Merkel became a high ranking public official.

It is likely that her Stasi background and Communist Party connections helped but there is no proof.
