The Zika virus outbreak currently gripping the Americas could have been sparked by the release of genetically modified mosquitoes in 2012, critics say.
The insects were engineered by biotechnology experts to combat the spread of dengue fever and other diseases and released into the general population of Brazil in 2012.
But with the World Health Organisation(WHO) now meeting in Geneva to desperately discuss cures for the Zika virus, speculation has mounted as to the cause of this sudden outbreak.
The Zika virus was first discovered in the 1950s but the recent outbreak has escalated alarmingly, causing birth defects and a range of health problems in South and central America.
The first cases were reported in Brazil last May with up to 1.5 million now thought people affected by the virus which is spread by mosquitoes endemic to Latin America.

Pure click bait.
Isn’t that the truth. :( Time has a way of marching on with scary stuff.
Cane Toads in Australia and Kawii.
How it got from the Pacific to Brazil is a matter for speculation. Blaming it on genetically modified mosquitoes, at this time, is silly.
EXACTLY! Was Bill Gates behind this, too?
I was also kind of thinking of “Brave New World”. The new deltas.
The incidence of birth defects from Zika are orders or magnitude higher than the common cold.
Further, Zika is tied to a specific birth defect.
Rates in Brazil since the outbreak have risen by 20 fold.
It’s a serious issue.
That doesn’t call for panic or over reaction, but it is serious enough to pay attention to the matter.
The outbreak has spread into central America, which means it will continue to come across our unprotected southern borders, but it’s politically incorrect to say that, so just imagine I didn’t say it...
“Zika virus was first discovered in the 1950s but the recent outbreak has escalated alarmingly, causing birth defects and a range of health problems in South and central America.”
Except for the discovered in the 50’s part, this is pretty much an outright lie.
It is speculated microcephaly is associated with Zika infection.
It is currently pure speculation based upon a supposed increase in microcephalic births in Brazil, but this increase itself is doubtful.
You don’t believe there are nearly 4000 cases in Brazil?
nO, it’s a result of banning any use of DDT.
“You donât believe there are nearly 4000 cases in Brazil?”
Cases of what?
Zika or microcephaly?
I assume you mean microcephaly.
4000 seems about normal for a country Brazil’s size. It seems to have been under-reported.
See
It’s doubtful there is even a correlation, but even if there were an association, to attribute causation is a pure flight of fancy.
the head of World Health Organization Margaret Chan is screaming Pandemic again
“The Zika virus is not dangerous to adults. It can cause birth defects, but so can any virus, including the common cold.”
Exactly.
There is no evidence Zika us causing birth defects.
There’s also evidence there is no increase in birth defects in Brazil.
Zika has been identified since the 50’s (1950’s). It’s doubtful that it’s genetically engineered.
It will be interesting to learn why all of a sudden Zika has moved from Africa to South America, but in this age where anyone can board a plane to anywhere, probably not mysterious.
YES - I think so
One obvious possibility for why the virus is suddenly a problem is the human population growth in that area.
