The Zika virus outbreak currently gripping the Americas could have been sparked by the release of genetically modified mosquitoes in 2012, critics say.
The insects were engineered by biotechnology experts to combat the spread of dengue fever and other diseases and released into the general population of Brazil in 2012.
But with the World Health Organisation(WHO) now meeting in Geneva to desperately discuss cures for the Zika virus, speculation has mounted as to the cause of this sudden outbreak.
The Zika virus was first discovered in the 1950s but the recent outbreak has escalated alarmingly, causing birth defects and a range of health problems in South and central America.
The first cases were reported in Brazil last May with up to 1.5 million now thought people affected by the virus which is spread by mosquitoes endemic to Latin America.

Zika Ping...
More than likely.
The brand of “science” that results in the release of genetically-engineered super-mosquitoes into the wild is the same kind of “science” that says “the science is settled” when it comes to “climate change.”
My guess, too
But, no, they’re “experts”.
Zebola ping maybe? (pics of the kids born with micro-encephaly are heart breaking)
More likely they cut back on the spraying and quit draining wetlands which resulted in a bumper crop of mosquitoes.
Uh-oh.
The same people who think they are God.
WHO are ghouls who lurk in the shadows sweating profusly rubbing thier dirty little hands together when they launch a new threat.
Anyone feel like going down to the Olympics in Rio this summer?
Thanks for the ping. Read it earlier on Drudge (phone). It made me pause for a moment. This is something to file away as the disease begins it’s course.
No. Zika has been identified there since the 1940s and was well known before that time.
The mosquito is our old enemy, the Aedes mosquito, responsible for the spread of yellow fever, dengue fever and a host of other diseases. It was not genetically modified but is simply doing what it has always done - go around and bite people.
The Zika virus is not dangerous to adults. It can cause birth defects, but so can any virus, including the common cold.
So the point is not to panic and let the UN manipulate you into exterminating human beings - but to exterminate the Aedes mosquito, as Dr Walter Reed did in the early 20th century with the US Health Dept. Mosquito eradication program. And the other thing, of course, that stamped out mosquitoes and their diseases was DDT.
Bring back DDT, which actually has never been proven to have a harmful effect in anything but bugs.
That often means that care comes from international charities (UN NGOs), the UN, or through some socialist arm of a socialist government.
It also provides a reason to transfer wealth from nations with bigger and/or better economies for the purpose of providing care (even if it buys new rugs for the palace).
That these diseases are spreading benefits interests, among which are a horde of Global Socialists and One-Worlders.
These children, while they may simply be the victims of happenstance, may well be pawns in a much larger game. If the latter is the case, it is doubly sad.
Prayers for pregnant women and their little babies. Thankful my son was born 19 years ago. This is very frightening.

your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should.
What happened is the Dengue Virus probably killed off the Zika virus.
So instead of mosquitoes with Dengue you get mosquitoes with Zika.
“Thankful my son was born 19 years ago.”
My first thought too in thinking of my family. But then - “Oh crap. I hope they have this figured out before my kids start having kids.”
