Trump congratulates Ted Cruz

Thanks Iowans for their support, and says he loves them ( he might even buy a farm there )

Gives his appreciation to all other candidates especially Huckabee ( who suspended his campaign )

Looks forward to New Hampshire ( where he has a huge lead ) and South Carolina ( likewise )

... I feel pretty good about the whole thing.

Yes, I agree.   Trump is not a quitter.   In fact, this will probably convince him to be even more careful and spend a bit more of his money on quality advertising.

And he was very gracious -- took his defeat very well.   And people are going to remember that too.

One thing I think he needs to change: the last video ad he showed today was a kind of blur of his rallies and that ad was not effective.   There were way too many images crammed into that piece, a bit distracting.   Instead he needs to hit home on the issues he's pushing.   The crowds speak for themselves, but he shouldn't emphasize them too much.

I also think he needs to lay off the Canadian thing, too.   Voters know about that, but if Trump emphasizes it too much, it sounds like Cruz represent too much of a threat.

So what do you all think?   Does anyone agree with this analysis?

I have been on FR since January 1998 and have NEVER seen such Nastiness. Attack Trump if you must but remember your guy has a LONG way to go to win the nomination. Trump congratulated Cruz so on to NH.

Don’t such a sore winner (barely). With that said, in all sincerity, enjoy your one and only win. Congrats! LOL!!! ;)

I have a serious question (series) for Cruz people: do you think he will deport the illegals? Because I think Trump will. If I could be convinced that Cruz or Rubio would be as tough on illegals as Trump I wouldn’t care who won.

I think Trump is going to spend more money and keep doing what he has been doing. Second in Iowa is pretty good. Rubio is ecstatic with third.

Trump was very gracious. A lovely parting for TRUMP with his supporters whom he sincerely seem to love and appreciate.

Now, we board the TRUMP TRAIN TO NEW HAMPSHIRE!!! Go get ‘em!

Cruz should get a bit of a bump going into NH, but I would be very surprised if he overtook Trump. Cruz has never counted on doing any better than 2nd or 3rd in NH, and I think he will do that without any problem. The one Trump will need to worry about in NH is Rubio. He should get a big bump out of Iowa going into NH, and NH tends to favor establishment candidates. If Cruz gets a mild bump and Rubio gets a big bump, NH could look a lot like Iowa with all three of them within a few points of each other.

I agree. Trump is a quick study. To go from nothing to a close second finish and a decent split of the delegates is not too shabby.

He also wrote The Art Of The Comeback.

Can you stop the nastiness. It is so beneath FR.

I agree. It’s amazing how rude some FReepers are with their smarmy arrogant attempts at humor. They’re probably the same jerks who punch coaches....

Agreed—Obviously these folks never played a sport where you congratulate and shake hands with your opponent...not helpful in any sort of party unification november

Thanks for the link.

What a gracious and classy speech by Mr. Trump.

In recent history (if I'm not mistaken) Huckabee won the 2008 Iowa Caucus, then McCain (the eventual Republican nominee that year) went on to win the New Hampshire Primary.   Likewise, in 2012, Santorum won the Iowa Caucus, then Romney (the eventual Republican nominee that year) went on to win the New Hampshire Primary.

This is just round 1, and there are many rounds to go, and it can be helpful to take a look at recent election seasons, and to maintain a long-term, balanced view of the whole election process.

(I feel I should add that, tonight, some of the more high-strung Cruz supporters here on FR sound almost maniacal on different threads, as they emotionally express their vitriolic bitterness in victory!  What on earth will they be like when they actually lose something?)

To all Trump supporters, just remember that great immortal quote of John Paul Jones:

"I have not yet begun to fight!"
God bless all here (including Cruz supporters).

Low-energy speech. Not presidential.

I thought it was lively and good. Cruz’s speech is a bore. So boring and lasting too long. He is going on an hour now. I mean he didn’t win the Presidency for goodness sake. I can’t imagine the State of the Union with him....it will be over at 2 am.

It was a nice speech. I’m glad to see them being nice to each other, even if it is just for tonight :)

Exactly. I hope Trump keeps it up. Notice this is very close to respect for the other candidates.

That is what I want to see. Issues and not tearing each other down. That is what the media/washington cartel want.

Tearing each other down until only the GOPe candidate is left standing, and the Democrat wins.

They are being cussed right now for being stupid and living like pigs.

My issue with Cruz is this -- I don't doubt that he is natural-born. But he was born in Canada to a non-American parent. There's no way around that he was born under rather unusual circumstances.

If a democrat was born in Sudan/Brazil/Sweden/pick-your rotten-place, to a a non-American parent, would I want him/her to be able to run? Hell no.

I believe this is the first time I've voiced my concern on this score here on FR. I do like Cruz, but to pretend his origins aren't problematic, or that they don't set a very bad precedent, is disingenuous.

Here is what. I am admitted to the Supreme Court of the United States; have argued Con Law cases; and I am a closer call Cruz supporter--I would vote for either him or Trump. I think both would do a great job--far better than the guy we have now.

I wrote on this narrow issue, Article II, Sec. 1 of the Constitution, first, for money, when I was on the Editorial Board of the Law Review at law school. Have been to Conventions; been alternate to both Credentials and Rules.

The legal issue; and the policy issue as you enunciate it, are a close question. There is no conclusive answer.

So in that context, the Liberal Establishment has used its control over the process to install an ineligible, unqualified person who is determined to destroy American culture and eliminate the Constitutional Judeo Christian ethical structure of our system of government and law. If our adversaries are not going to play by the rules, there is simply no reason we should see ourselves as bound by an arguable construction of the rules either to the extent we can avoid their application in an effort to get our country back.

I have said several times, Cruz is an expert Constitutional Lawyer and it is disappointing that he hasn't dealt with the issue earlier under circumstances in which he had leverage and could have resolved the issue. That's history. Hopefully he gets by it on the next pass.

It is a positive that we have both Cruz and Trump going to the Convention because that will discourage the establishment from getting rid of either one because the votes will go to the other.

You said it!! This race in this state of Iowa was simply about the bank doors opening, about money and donors, for the GOPE to pick through the left overs and land on a candidate who will carry their water.

The Bush donor base can now cheerfully move to Rubio, and with great relief, unload Jeb.

TRUMP ROCKS! And we aren’t going anywhere, as supporters.

Over half of our caucus was new registrations saying they were libertarians or independents before . Rubio won. What does that tell us.
