I's been known for decades that light - moderate drinking reduces risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), total and ischaemic stroke and total mortality (all causes) in middle-aged and elderly men and women.

Alcohol also has a specific protective effect against hematological malignancies, and reduces in-hospital deaths following traumatic injuries such as fractures, internal injuries and open wounds, with in some cases a reduction of almost 50 percent in hospital mortality rates.

I'm not advocating that non-drinkers start drinking, and that present drinkers double it.

I'm just saying that, like so many things, alcohol has both risks and benefits.

One glass of wine won't hurt you or your baby, even early in pregnancy. And if you're a nursing mother, beer is a highly milk-friendly nutrient tonic. Truth.

So, do you want to die of heart disease or be a blubbering idiot because of lack of brain cells. ;-)

I know that there are mild benefits to light alcohol drinking.

I choose to live with an intact brain, thank you! ;-)
