I applied for a job at an ITT spinoff while working there as a contractor. The application wanted to know if I was black. I asked the HR lady (room temperature IQ) if that mattered. She said that every morning the first thing she checked was whether any minorities had applied so she could make the contact and schedule an interview. If somebody didn’t check the box she assumed they were white. (By assume they were white I interpreted she didn’t consider them as a candidate. Though having sat through meetings on the subject she was frequently told they needed to fill the position now, regardless. You can interpret that as you would like.)

The trick might be to "check the box" and claim it was accidental and inadvertent if questioned at a later date.
A clever hiring manager who likes the "black" candidate would be wise to say nothing and just hire him, if qualified.

Yeah, but nowadays if you are white, you can easily self-describe yourself as black, like the liberals do when they feel like it, and then just check the "Black" box. Or you can pull a Bruce Jenner and self-describe as a woman, and apply for a job as a woman.

I once worked for a place and asked about my promotion prospects. I was told that the company (which did a lot of business with the feds) had too many white males as managers, and would not be promoting any for a while until that was fixed.

I left the next year.
