I just ran across an excellent unclassified article about our ASW force:

http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a401150.pdf

I was surfing the net the other day and saw a youtube video of a small tsunami that occurred about two weeks ago at Pacific Beach, Wa:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zU4POa_Oz0M

I remembered that was a location of a “NAVFAC”, which was code word for the land based SONAR known as the SOSUS system.

So, I googled navfac pacific beach and that article was in one of the hits.

WOW.

Thanks for info.

Had not seen this report but it confirms what I have heard from other sources.

This pretty much explains why the Russians are expanding and modernizing their sub force - they are exploiting a huge vulnerability gap in our Anti Submarine defense systems.

Our antisubmarine net has essentially become non existent because what has not been dismantled over the years has become obsolete and worn out.

All our defense budget money has went to up armored humvees and Stryker Armored vehicles (many of which are now captured and in the hands of ISIS) instead of upgrading our aging strategic nuclear deterrent capability.

The one very bright spot, our extremely effective missile defense systems, have been all but killed over the last 6 years by Obama.

The system worked darn well and was ready to begin deployment to operational status just as Obama was sworn into office. One of the priorities of the Obama Administration has been to destroy our missile defense programs and when was the last time anyone has heard the term Missile Defense System mentioned.

I'd like to think that there is an upgraded and updated ASW system capability operating in the Black World , but it's not likely.

If the Russians have achieved operational superiority of their submarine based strategic nuclear forces we are screwed because their newest generation of MIRVed Submarine launched ballistic missiles are quite good.

We may never really get to have a chance to regret just how badly our country has been screwed by Obama, at least not for much longer that the 20-30 minutes it takes for a ballistic missile to reach it's target.

From a technological standpoint our ASW technical capabilities are indeed much better - not so sure about coverage.

Our submarine fleet, like our fighter fleet, is downsized, aging and needs to be replaced in the near future.

With Obammy at the helm, we may soon see subs once again off Wisconsin, probably unloading isil refugees.

It is amazing to me that we once had such industrial ability that we were building subs and other vessel in Wisconsin.

That America is long gone.

Spent a few years in the early 70s based in Hawaii and we sometimes chased the last of the Pacific diesels during training exercises. I never got to spend any time on a pig boat but did a couple days on a nuc—that cured me of any sub fever!

And just who of any authority would make that claim—the PR office of the Whitehut?

The Russians are running out of hard currency due to collapsing oil prices.

You and FR blam post the most interesting and informative articles and I want to thank you both.

While I was reading your post, all relaxed and anticpating a good read, I looked at your link and thought 'poor me' as you did not make a live link and I had to highlight and drag the links to the new tab on Chrome. Then I had to laugh, seriously, we have made so much progress and things are so great and here I am complained about having to make an extra click... Anyway, I really like your posts.

Know a guy who was on Trumpetfish and two boomers. Said he enjoyed the diesel boat better excepting only when getting the living shit scared out of him once when they lost depth control, went down at a steep angle and nearly got to crush depth.

It was a Guppy conversion also and they did training for the surface ASW forces and had a good time at that.

I read that 2001 report about SOSUS and SURTASS. Hurrah, now will have an even harder time going to sleep.

Looks like all of the SURTASS ships are gone now with no replacements.

SOSUS ??? Who knows?

You'll never know what you missed...aaahhh, snorkeling with four screaming 1600 HP diesel 'Jimmies' during a rain storm.. Nothing in the world like it, believe me.

Yup, that was fun. We 'sank' the carrier Essex a couple times one day in 1963.

How was life on a submarine? Did you ever get claustrophobic?
