McGrath: Ted Cruz Stands Alone On a Female Draft
Conservative Review ^ | February 8, 2016 | Art McGrath

After last week's surprise statements by two top generals that women should sign up for the draft just like men, Sen. Ted Cruz has set himself apart from his Republican rivals in the race for president by saying unequivocally that the idea is "nuts."

When questioned at a Senate committee hearing last week, the Commandant of the Marine Corps. Gen. Robert Neller and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley both said they thought women should have to register for Selective Service when they turn eighteen, just like men.

During Saturday's presidential candidate debate in Manchester, N.H., everyone on stage who spoke seemed to be in favor of it.

"I have to admit, as I was sitting there listening to that conversation, my reaction was, 'Are you guys nuts?'" Cruz said of his rivals at a town hall style gathering in New Hampshire the next day. At a later campaign event he addressed the issue again, saying:...

Cruz should really own the issue and call for a complete end to draft registration. It isn’t needed.

Of the 2 million plus men who served in Vietnam more than half were either combat soldiers, close combat support or in areas subject to regular attack.

But let’s go with your 10% number. The Vietnam draft was a vehicle to replace infantry troops. The Navy and AirForce had no problems filling slots.

So if you draft about 300,000 per year as we did during the height of Vietnam what do you do with 150,000 18 year old girls per year who want nothing to do with being GI Jane?

Thing is, reading the Congressional Record of the debate over the 14th Amendment, it was all about granting freed slaves equal rights. Nothing more.

Well we will have to disagree since I don’t think Generals have any business at all writing laws. I didn’t know anybody thought they should.

There are some areas where women could excel. All women submarine crews for instance. Women make excellent engineers, are more resistant to claustrophobia, severe cold, etc. Pilots or even shuttle pilots. Snipers on their own. There are combat areas for women should they so chose, but I do not approve of front line combat with men as they do NOT have the upper body strength necessary. Many women performed excellently in WW2. They were used extensively in the SOE. About 30% never came back but they unfailingly got the job done. Women were indispensable in the underground movements, particularly in France.

In this case i think they should definitely have their say. What is the percentage of former Military in the house and Senate? Compare that to the percentage of the house and Senate who are lawyers. Who knows better what is the best thing for the military, Duncan Hunter or Bill Clinton, for example...........

...if women want to be treated equally they should have to bear the same burdens. They asked for it.

Some have, but not all women are radical pro-choice God-hating feminists. That's like saying all Americans deserve Obamacare because it is their fault that Obama got two terms.

“Then get rid of the whole draft, remove females right to vote, or not allow women to sign up for student loans since men cant unless they register.”

There is no draft - only registration. Net: the idea of removing females right to vote does not seem reasonable.

How can drafting 18 year old girls be good for the Army and Marine Corps? The perfumed princes are political animals who should have no part in the law making process except to answer questions posed by law makers (Congress).

They asked for it.

Why are you referring to all women collectively? My daughters didn't have a damn thing to do with Pat Schroeder.

Not so much fighter pilots.
Upper body strength is essential and under hi-g they cannot function as well and as long as men.

Since the lawmakers have been and are proving to be the law breakers and sending our troops on suicide missions with their weasel tactics to gain votes in a Politically Correct world,(ROE) I think that which is concerning the Military should be more heavily endorsed by the military. The C in C still has the final say, but the men on the front lines should have more to say about their world because they know the realities of it. You wouldn’t hire a lawyer to construct a 40 story building. He wouldn’t know the psi of concrete being poured in front of his nose. But the foreman on the job would know if it was in compliance with the specs..

So bomber pilots, co pilots, engineers, or ferry pilots.

“Every Marine is a rifleman.” Such is far from true in the Army.

It's easy to sit back, laugh, and say "well, if they want equality, this is it."

The problem is that the men serving in the line companies who may get killed because of this B.S. had nothing to do with it.
